Here are my P38J notes so far... based mostly on what others have told me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Biggest trick to the P38J is to change the fight from fast to slow or vice versa quickly.
Don't use more than 2 or 3 notches flaps unless alone in a slow stall fight.
Seperate engine control can help roll faster but not turn faster.
Set longer gun convergance to raise the trajectory of rounds so you don't have to lead so much.
Use combat trim unless very fast or very slow... then set manual trim to middle of range.
Try to stay away from flat turns (although some say they are fine).
Drain wing tanks first to get slightly better roll.
Fight with 50% fuel or less, so use DTs to increase range. (altough some says 100% fuel + DT are fine).
25% fuel adds about 600 lbs. of weight.
Use snap rolls to avoid guns as a defensive tactic.
Be patient, don't get overly aggressive (lose E) too quickly.
When diving use rudder, opposite aileron, and flaps to slow or loop around quickly.
Chop throttle when diving. P38s pick up speed very fast due to weight.
Full throttle plus wep when climbing to counteract gravity.
P38 has an easier time fighting uphill, than downhill.
Don't be afraid to move the ailerons a lot to maintain a stall.
