If England really wanted to invade and pillage the USA during the War of 1812.... They would have easily done so.

Napoleon was a bigger problem, if you had, at that time, been faced with the entire British Navy and Army... there would be little to nothing you could do to stop it.

That's the reality of it. While the war of 1812 has entered American mythology. In truth very little went right for the fledgling state and only Britain's preoccupation with Napoleon prevented them from unleashing it's full force on the Americans. Really it was only an irritation to the British. But it was an uniting force for the USA.

I read recently that it would interesting to comtemplate what the result of the war would have been if they'd sent a certain Irishman Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington) to deal with the Americans. Lucky escape that!

The occupation and burning of Washington DC was a naval operation. A force of 2,500 soldiers under Major General Robert Ross aboard HMS Royal Oak, three frigates, three sloops, and ten other vessels, sailed to the Washington area and together with Royal Marines under Admiral Cockburn's command, Ross landed at Benedict, Maryland on August 19. His forces routed the US Navy's Chesapeake Bay Flotilla, a detachment of US Marines, and the inexperienced American militia at the Battle of Bladensburg on August 24. After that Washington was undefended, its government fled, and the governmental buildings were looted and burned by the British, in revenge for the US Navy doing the same in Upper Canada a year earlier.

Wellington was just about to be posted to America. He was due to follow his Peninsula Army heading there. A lot of the regiments that gained distinction against France were sent to deal with the upstarts across the sea. Regiments such as the 60th KGL were sent over, with attached officers from many regiments, including the 95th Rifles, one of the most highly decrated units in the army and with some of the most battle honours.

While it is true that the Americian navy triumphed on several small engagements against the Royal Navy, when it came down the last final full scale battle, they were beaten. One the other side, the British navy was successful in almost every engagement until the final battle of New Orleans. Hence the new units sent out. Had the United States not ended the war, they would have been crushed.

As others have said, the War of 1812 was a side show to the Peninsular War. When Napoleon returned in 1815, the units in America were immediatly sent back to Europe. Some men had basically just arrrived in the US when ordered to return home at full speed. Officers such as Harry Smith were turned around and sent back to deal with the 'real' threat.

As for the White House, it was men of the 44th Regiment of Foot who hold the crown for burning it down. They still haven't forgotten

Tne Canadians love to take credit for burning the White House but in reality it was British troops who left from the Royal Navy Dockyard in Bermuda who did it.

For the Brits it was another Colonial War of sorts. They were engaged against Napoleon and America was a big time nusance. The Brits needed to clear their flank and engaged. We won the War though the Brits did considerable damage, short of the Battle of New Orleans.

  If the Brits could take back thier territory from those American Upstarts they would have. That is not how things worked out though.
   Defeating the worlds greatest Sea Power at the time in a Head to Head Battle would have been Disaster for the young US.
     So we sliced off chunks and England sought easier targets just like the MA Hordes do.

And by this time the Kingdom was being all but officially run by his son (since papa had lost most of his grip on reality after about 1810), who took over as George IV when his father finally gave up the ghost in 1820- after a rule of almost exactly 60 years.
