From what I saw on the film KN found ourselves between 2 groups of Hurricanes. We engaged 1, the 2nd came in and joined the fight fairly low. It appeared a 3rd group at 15-20k came in right when you bombed.

Some screenshots of the bombing of V8

The 49th and VF-17 were in charge of defending V8.  We ran into the A6M's SE of V8, but didn't see any buffs, so we didn't engage and let our scout look for them, as we headed back toward V8.  Our scout, SIK1, found the buffs a bit SE of V8, at which point we turned to engage the bombers.  Unfortunately for us we didn't have a lot of time to hit them before they were over V8, and .303's aren't exactly a one pass and knock a buff down weapon. So we lost a few planes to defensive fire as they almost had to saddle up. Some managed to land, some didn't.  viking73's screen shot looks like when VF-17 turned to hit the buffs.

There, fixed it  ;)

I had a lot of fun this frame. We delayed TO to T+10 and it came close to being our demise as we were still climbing when we spotted the 1st group of zekes. Branch made the right decision by turning us away from the sweep and it allowed us time to spot the bombers. Then we engaged and boy, it does take a lot of those 30cals to bring down a Betty. A solid 1 second burst right in an engine flamed my second. 1st one I hosed right in the fuselage and it didn't do squat. Someone had to finish it for me.

It got shot in the face by the last bomber of that set. The sneaky jap had his tracers turned of so I didn't realize he was in fact pumping me full of lead. Heard pings and looked back expecting to see a zeke all over me. That when it dawned on me that the pings were from that bomber less than 150 in front of my nose. By then I was in a death spiral with oil/pw/missing wing.

Well played everyone

the other escorts were mixed right in with us, but as you, we were also overwhelmed. we did the best we could just to get the bombs off, some of us didnt even get that far! it was fun none the less. again, good job with the diversion, the boys appreciated it.

quick question though, were you defenders over V8 flying teh 8 gun or 12 gun hurries?

A mix of the 2. I had an 8 gun. Still from my testing and a kind of loose conscensus between my squaddies, it'd not have made a huge difference. I made a few slashing attacks and didn't do any real damage because the hits were all over the place. What I needed for the kill was a very long burst from very close in. That left me with little options but to saddle up close in hoping the guy in front was either sleeping or drunk. Turns out he was neither.

Luckily, since we were close to one of our bases, I got to bail but I had to walk 10 miles without beer or any kind of hard liquor.

tmetal,

The large majority were 8 gun.  In our practice Thursday night we found the 12 gun put us at a pretty big disadvantage against the zeros.  I'm guessing we had 4 or 5 with 12 gun the rest were 8.

tmetal, those extra 2 guns in each wing, located as they are near the tips, makes the Hurri wallow like a pig in a mud bath. They might be marginally better than the 8-gun pkg for BUFF killing, but, imho, the cons outweigh the pros.
