50CAL. takeing out a main tank battle gun.

how is it the a bunch of 50 cal bullets from a P-51 takes out a M-18 main gun?.. how is that possible. twice this has happen. i can see it taking out the 50CAL it self but dissabled the main gun. am i wrong can this really happen high tec.

Because it has an open top turrent?

If you'll notice, most of the top of the turret is open, just like a wirble.

a stream of 0.50 cals into the top of that turret would kill everyone in it likely, and probably damage the gun to the extent that it could not continue to operate.

dead crew + damaged gun = no main gun anymore.

It means the crew in the open top has been ventilated, gun turns red because it is non-functional, not necessarily destroyed.

Just be happy you can retrieve a brand new self-inflating crew from the many boxes of supplies strewn about the battlefield!

One more thing, the M-18 is not a Main Battle Tank.  It is a Tank Destroyer that relies on speed and firepower to make up for its very thin armor.  Don't let its shape fool you.

Thin skin still stops machinegun fire. Although in this case, the fire coming from above if hitting inside the turret could hit anyone standing, sitting, or what have you in there. Of course, in WWII you did not have the air saturation you do in here.

Some tanks do have a weakness around the gun mantle as well, if that is part of your question - some even have very little armor there.

The M2HB .50 can punch a hole in any side of the 5mm to 25mm armor on the M18.  IRL of course. (And that's using the understated "reported" armor penetration value of BMG ammo)


I have exploded them, multiple times, in an M3... so it appears the game is good to go regarding this.

Thin armor, open top turret, gun breach sitting right in the middle of it all, of course its gonna get damaged. You're lucky if you don't die from a burst in the M-18 from any plane with 4+ .50 cals.
