I need A competent mechanic
« on: February 06, 2013, 10:15:14 AM »
I have a 2000 GMC 2500 SD sierra.  About a year ago I had the fuel pump replaced and the car has worked fine since then.  Two days ago I tried to start the car and it would try to turn over but no combustion and there for no starting.  I have a remote start and tried that and it again attempted to turn over but the same result.  I had the car towed to a shop and they said that they got a couple of codes off the computer that indicated the ignition switch and or that a loose / old worn key was the culprit.  They ordered a new key through the dealer with out my consent and told me that it would be 600.00 bucks with the key and new ignition.  He did not know that there was a remote or key less starter on the car.  When I explained this to him he was kind of taken aback and said he would look into the issue further.  My question is does the remote start by pass the ignition issue that he claims was the problem?  If it does what is most likely the issue with it not starting.  Sounds like a loose or spotty connection to the fuel pump to me.

Thanks TOE

Quick edit: The problem is intermittent...It will work fine for days and then no boom boom.  Try it again in an hour and it works fine.

Usually there is a second key in the remote starter control module to "fool"  the original security system. Then again usually if key is not recognised car should not turn over. There is not enough info.

did the guy check basics before digging into the computer?

 initial check should be:

spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse, air. those can all be accomplished in the same test.

you mentioned that it's intermittent........as of late, i've had a few crank position sensors go intermittently in gm products(they must've improved them, because gm's never used to do that). without the crank sensor, the computer doesn't know when, to begin sequencing fuel, and spark.

as far as the remote start, i think it bypasses the security system, soley because you cannot drive the car till you've put the key in the ignition, and therefore, it's presumed safe to bypass this.

it's hard for me to believe they ordered a key/ignition switch without your ok, ESPECIALLY with the cost, AND that they don't seem to be sure.

 hopefully some of this helped.......

would the crank sensor show a drop in voltage and or create the codes that he saw? Also would this be an intermittent problem...he just appears to be scratching his head because he cant duplicate the problem consistently or long enough to figure out what part in the chain is broken.

Thanks TOE

sometimes the crank sensor will leave no codes. i used to do a "tap" test on the older ones that were mounted behind the damper. it could very well become intermittent. i just did a 97 lumina about 2 weeks ago that was doing just this.

if it runs crappy sometimes, it could also be caused by an idle air control motor.

OK I'm extremely pissed.....I specifically told this guy to not fix my ignition because I was not sure that this was the issue because of the remote start by passing it and it still would not start.  So I get a call saying that they did replace the ignition switch and they disabled my remote start (that I paid good money for) and that I now owe 480.00 bucks.  Sounds to me like this jerk off does not know if he fixed anything or not and he was just guessing at the problem.

whelp.....i sure as hell wouldn't take the vehicle back without that remote start working, especially if it didn't fix the problem. i hate places like that....they make us all look bad.

To top it all off he said the battery was bad...and if I drive it away with the bad battery I could fry everything and it might cost a few thousand to get the car running again. I told him to forget the battery I'll put a spare in when I get home.  I run to the local parts store. First I have it tested with the little hand held and it says its bad...but...the guy says this has side mount posts made from steel and I wouldn't trust this read out..so I say can we pull it and test it..he says sure...the battery tested fine.  He then says lets hook it to the big machine and see what that says....tested fine.  I'm thinking law suit at this point because not only did he disconnect the remote start but cut out the wires for the door locks too.  This guy works on high end cars to boot...I figured if he can fix land rovers my GMC should be no problem.  WTF

if it tested bad in the truck, but tested fine out of it, look VERY carefully at the battery terminal ends. those side terminal ends have a habit of collecting corrosion which will effectively block the good flow of power.

as for cutting the wires to the power door locks.....check all of the fuses first, as it would take a deliberate effort to get at those wires to cut them.

before lawsuit, try talking to the actual shop manager, or the shop owner, rather than the mechanic or service manager. let them know what's been going on, and how you feel screwed over.

this same kinda crap just happened to my ex-wife. she has a new 4runner, and took it some place to have fog lights installed. the dam thing nearly caught fire when she picked it up.....it needed an entire new harness under the dash, thanks to them. took 3 months too.

wow thats a pretty snafu situation :O  I dont know much about remote starts other than they are good when they work and quite pricey :lol  agreed with Cap, fuel, air and spark should have been his first tests.  I sure as heck wouldnt take my truck back with stuff broken that wasnt broken before it went there :old:  thats why I only deal with 1 garage, been stiffed by a couple and one of them was a gmc dealer   good luck man :salute
