I'm sure a trainer will be by shortly, and working with one is a great idea. Another option is to hook up with Twinboom in the MA. he is one of the top dogs in the 38G. I think he is out right now, but should be back soon. We fly as Rooks, look him up.

Welcome to the 38!!!

I'm more of a P38J kind of guy, but I'm sure I can help you in the 38G. I'm available most evenings from 9pm-11pm est, except for Thursdays.

As of right now, I am already booked Monday and Wednesday next week with other students.

Let the OP have first dibs on your time.  I am available pretty much anytime for the next month or so.

One thing you can do before you meet with a Trainer is go to offline and push yourself to stay aware of your airspeed in all situations such as loops and turns. Make sure your setup has easy access flaps and you can operate them without looking.  In the Game Sounds then advanced, turn up the flap sound a bit if needed so your ears can help.

This might make your time with a Trainer more effective.

Delirium will get you squared away   :aok

You asked me about defensive situations in the G.  Honestly, I try to avoid them.   :) Stay fast (not too fast, just fast enough to do what you'll need to do) and you'll find your options are much more numerous.   Other than the standard "guns defense" stuff, going into a rolling scissors is usually a good idea if you can't shake a con any other way.  I try to save that for a 'last ditch' type effort, because if you're busted on it you're either dead already or about to be.  The 38's (except for a fast L model) are terrible in a flat scissors, but once you get it rolling will usually corkscrew sufficiently to at least give you some more time.   Timing is critical.  Start it too soon and the con (especially 109's ) will just throw out airbrakes and ventilate your plane.  Too late, and well...   I screw up rolling scissors all the time, but every once in a while I get it right.  It's really fun reversing people that were stuck on your 6 just a second ago.   :D

Good luck.

 :salute

I'm far from exceptional but I do fly the 38G a great deal of the time.   If you look in this thread

I posted several films from recent MA fights, hope they help, if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.

To make training easier, you should already have a good understanding of BFM and ACM.  If not, then you should head over to Netaces.org and read the section on Basic Maneuvers and then read all the articles under Learning to Fight.  This way when you meet up with a trainer you'll have a grasp of the basics and it will make your time with the trainer that much more productive.  Remember, the P-38 (all types) isn't a beginner's plane to learn to fly and fight in.

Make sure too that you record your training session.  You will watch it several times.  You come away with a lot of information that takes  several weeks to work into your repertoire.

Using throttle as an example to maintain better turn rates sound easy and it is in the offline practice.  Yet add a spit trying to burn your butt and what has not become natural is cumbersome at best.  I know, I still have a long way to go.

I look forward to my next training session after I incorporate my first lesson.
