what navy song is this?
« on: July 14, 2013, 09:19:59 PM »
Anyone know the name of this navy song and where I might find lyrics or a recording?  I had it on a record with several service tunes when I was a child, and can't find this one.  Here is what I vaguely remember of the lyrics

When you see a guy with his head held high, take a look at his navy wings
Something something blue, with a heart so true, with the gold of his navy wings
And as long as he flies above the sea, in his heart his hope still rings (?)
May he never cease to fly in peace, on his mighty navy wings!
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Hmm, me neither. I wonder if it was recorded under a different title.

People never search past the first page of Google.

Everyone knows that only porn and fake medications are on the subsequent pages.  Plus, if what you want actually IS somewhere other than the first page, there is no way to vote the results up or otherwise tag the page as a valid search result.  Hence my weak search followed by asking in a forum where I already know someone knows the answer or can find it quickly :)

Hi eagl -- if you're still getting replies on this topic, I wanted to pass along the following.

First, the sheet music that the other member provided doesn't include second verse of the song.  Here are both verses:

Mighty Navy Wings

When you see a guy with his head held high
Take a look at his Navy wings
‘neath that coat of blue beats a heart that’s true
To the code of the Navy wings
And as long as he flies above the sea
In our hearts a hope still clings
May he never cease to fly in peace
On his mighty Navy wings.

Raise your glass on high
Stand and shout “Aye, aye”
In a toast to those Navy wings
They’re the symbol of everything we love
In this land where freedom springs
Drink a toast once again to Navy men
Cheer until the whole world rings
To the glory of the guys we love
And their mighty navy wings

Second, I'm willing to bet that the record with several service tunes you had as a child was the same one I had as a child.  I don't remember the name of the original LP, but it is now available as a CD under the title "America's Finest: Inspiring Patriotic Songs."  Here is the link on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Americas-Finest-Inspiring-Patriotic-Songs/dp/B000063591

It's a low-quality transfer from an LP or tape, but to me that just adds to the "authenticity" of listening to it on a low-fi record player in the 1960s.  As I said in my review on Amazon, my dad was born on the Fourth of July and served in the Navy in WWII, so I put this in and crank it up every Independence Day.

I have only found "Might Navy Wings" on two CDs, this one and a sea chanty CD, but it's not as "USNAGlee Club"-sounding as the record we had as kids.

For immediate gratification, there's a YouTube video of "Mighty Navy Wings" from the original LP:

Bonus track: "Ballad for Americans" (Bert Parks singing)
