CVs ruining CT
« on: September 04, 2001, 09:19:00 PM »
Evrytime I log on, some pimpled computer geek would be strategic and dweeb pilot find a way to put a CV right in the middle of the chanel where most fights happen.
Both countries are doing it, it's a bit irritating  :)
Would it be possible to trap the CVs somewhere on the edge of the map between ilands, so we can have some serious fighting without having to avoid the water ack runing and exploding puffy clouds of death?
thank you in advance  :)

Not only do the LW have to worry about friendly 88's they also have to worry about cv's.  Sick and tired of listening to BOOM, BOOM, BOOM just trying to get to the channel, and yes it popped my 190 on one sortie(of about 4) I flew last friday.
I don't think the allied flak fires on friendlies...

Are terrains easily modified?  if so would be a big deal to make a CT version of the terrain without cv's?

Yeah, I'd prefer no CVs as well.

S!

I agree it would be much better to not have the CV Task forces.

Historically neither side operated Capital ships in the Channel on a regular basis.  The German Heavy Cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were based temporarily out of Brest in Brittany (off map to the Southwest) in 1941, then made a run up the Channel back to Germany after things got too hot.  After that there were no Capital ships until D-Day when U.S. and British Battleships were based off Normandy to provide shore bombardment.  But they were surrounded by destroyers, friendly minefields and covered heavily by friendly CAP.

The rest of the time there was nothing but small convoys escorted by Destroyers and either E-Boats and Armed Trawlers for the Germans or MTB's for the British.  These smaller vessels were quite common.  Destroyer flotillas also operated independently.

It would be nice to see these kinds of small convoys to provide targets for both sides.  The destroyers AH has now do not have the 5 inch batteries which all all though.

I think the Flak problems are also a result of the overmodelling of the large caliber Flak.  It's too accurate, especially at higher alts.  But at the same time, the 20mm, 37mm and 40mm stuff is probably undermodelled.  It should be deadly for anyone trying an attack below 6,000ft.

I think the large caliber flak is modelled this way to deal with the fact that level heavy bombers like the B-17 or the various mediums are also way too accurate in hitting ships from high alt.  If their accuracy could be toned down a bit too, then maybe we'd have a balance.  The USAAF medium bombers did not do level bombing attacks on ships.  Instead they developed a 'skip' bombing techique which had the bombs dropped from low level.  The bombs hit the water, skipped a couple times like a pebble, and then hit the side of the target, usually going right through into the guts of the ship.  But they didn't do this technique against heavily defended targets, it would be suicide.  It was mostly used against merchant ships or single destroyers and destroyer escorts.

CV's are just not right in the current terrain in CT. I try to move them away if I possibly can.

On the friendly flak, I think I disagree. They are anoying, or downright dangerous, but if I have to chose between MA IFF, and selective targeting, and this "enter the area at your own risk" I think I rather like CT settings. Friendly fire is a fact in any war, and psichyc powers of MA settings are ludicrous, IMO.

Cheers,

Pepe

For Overlord I think the Channel should be full of Allied ships.  Channel should be  "No Fly Zone" for the LW during that period.  Otherwise I don't like them too much for the reasons stated above.

I removed the CVs in a terrain update last week and emailed it to Pyro.

I don't know why the new version is not being used in the CT yet.

[EDIT] Also fixed the ack firing on friendlies

HONESTLY I DONT WANT IT but  maybe if its getting too annoying for players it may be in the interest of the CT to change the maps until the bugs are fixed.
Im willing to suffer the odd bug because i like the feel of the CT but who knows how many have been driven out because its damaged or killed them.
We could always bring it back as soon as its fixed.Maybe we could use a russian front map?

oops sorry redwing ...didnt read your reply  :) that it great news.

I like the CV groups...  It's a good 10 point perk sortie in a B26.   :D  Soooo easy too when Jerry is off playing with the Allied fighters.  You can line up the carrier and cruiser in one little run.   :D
