I agree it would be much better to not have the CV Task forces.
Historically neither side operated Capital ships in the Channel on a regular basis. The German Heavy Cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were based temporarily out of Brest in Brittany (off map to the Southwest) in 1941, then made a run up the Channel back to Germany after things got too hot. After that there were no Capital ships until D-Day when U.S. and British Battleships were based off Normandy to provide shore bombardment. But they were surrounded by destroyers, friendly minefields and covered heavily by friendly CAP.
The rest of the time there was nothing but small convoys escorted by Destroyers and either E-Boats and Armed Trawlers for the Germans or MTB's for the British. These smaller vessels were quite common. Destroyer flotillas also operated independently.
It would be nice to see these kinds of small convoys to provide targets for both sides. The destroyers AH has now do not have the 5 inch batteries which all all though.
I think the Flak problems are also a result of the overmodelling of the large caliber Flak. It's too accurate, especially at higher alts. But at the same time, the 20mm, 37mm and 40mm stuff is probably undermodelled. It should be deadly for anyone trying an attack below 6,000ft.
I think the large caliber flak is modelled this way to deal with the fact that level heavy bombers like the B-17 or the various mediums are also way too accurate in hitting ships from high alt. If their accuracy could be toned down a bit too, then maybe we'd have a balance. The USAAF medium bombers did not do level bombing attacks on ships. Instead they developed a 'skip' bombing techique which had the bombs dropped from low level. The bombs hit the water, skipped a couple times like a pebble, and then hit the side of the target, usually going right through into the guts of the ship. But they didn't do this technique against heavily defended targets, it would be suicide. It was mostly used against merchant ships or single destroyers and destroyer escorts.
