The Maze was fun in the Y-Wing. :)

I found the Redemption mission a blessing compared to the other one I encountered.  I honestly forgot the name of it and when it was done, but it was the one where you had to destroy a Nebulon B with just yourself, in a A-Wing, all the while trying to prevent it from destroying all the cargo containers and being attacked by TIE Interceptors (I THINK it was Interceptors).  Where 8 out of the 10 times it would exit hyperspace in the MIDDLE of all the containers. :bhead

I don't remember a mission where you had to destroy a Nebulon B in an A-wing. There were certainly missions where you had to defend containers while flying the A-wing, but none where the mission objectives involved destroying a frigate.

Thank god for that, too, because those Nebulon Bs were death incarnate. Even though taking on Star Destroyers in the original X-Wing was actually a challenge (no auto-targeting, and no destroyable guns, meaning you had to both MANUALLY aim at the shield towers and couldn't pick off the guns to make your life easier), I'd STILL rather fight a Star Destroyer than a Nebulon B. Cap ships just got way too easy to knock out once they introduced destroyable guns and component targeting.

Interesting.  As someone who still considers the original TIE Fighter as one of the greatest games ever I am excited.

Hopefully it will not be flown external only (F3 mode)...

Tie fighter is the penultimate SW sim. Still periodically break out the CD just for the depth of mission

That whole original Xwing and Tie Fighter series brings back many fond memories.  They topped Wing Commander, and did it with panache, quite a feat in those days.  It still boggles my mind thinking about what Lucas Arts was able to do with the PC's and video cards available to them at the time - or lack of video cards when you think about it.  I remember flying  Xwings beside capital ships in convoy missions and the feeling you got of being beside a big behemoth of a ship was hard to explain, but a very real and tangible experience.

I hope they stay somewhat true to these original games with this "reboot".  I'm cautiously optimistic.

If not, Star Citizen from Chris Roberts and the Wing Commander team has me in high spirits.

The one downside of the X-Wing series compared to Wing Commander was the lack of a branching storyline. If you failed a mission, you had to keep trying it again and again (and again, and again because especially in X-Wing, some of those missions were tear-your-hair-out HARD. The latter games got easier) until you got it right.

Funnily enough, the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade which I helped to start is STILL going all these years later. All the more impressive considering that everything we know about editing and modeling for the game actually had to be learned by trial-and-error. There were no official "builders." Every program used for community OPT and mission-making was made BY the community.

The problem with XvT multiplayer is that because of how they handled the flight modeling (all craft had their best turning performance at 1/3 throttle with neutral power settings), fights all broke down into a circle jerk, and if you weren't flying a TIE you were screwed. And let's not even get into the beam weapons (adding a beam on the TIEs did NOT reduce their engine power, so was basically a free source of energy).

I know it was hard enough that they had to do a FIX and change the setup of the mission since it was impossible to complete when the Nebulon B exit hyperspace in the middle of the containers.  I know it was a REQUIREMENT to destroy it if you wanted to complete it at the very least, due to it being container happy.  I still have a CD of X-Wing, back when they first put it onto CD.  I don't remember when they did, but I know they had not fixed the mission yet.  The fix came a bit later.

I just signed up. Had to add an extra "o" to the name, 'booo' in order to get my name. Then I'm told 'if I get selected'....well. I don't even get a test flight, interview or a chance to show pics of the COs wife in the shower.

We'll see...

I went ahead and registered, may at least check it out.

I'll probably just end up flying the X-wing the whole time (unless they pull that WT bullchit where you have to earn access to certain ships).

God bless you DOS Box!

Just flew The Maze in the original X-Wing. I remember it was grueling, (110 gates on each lap) but I forgot just HOW exhausting it was to fly the full 8 laps in one hop. And because the platform layout is random, there's no memorizing the location of the gates and targets. And some of the platforms are positioned so you have to be FAST if you want to pick off any of the targets before they light you up.

The training missions in TIE Fighter and X-Wing: Alliance were SO much easier.

Yeah, and a major pain in the Y-Wing.

For the Rebel Alliance, I took a liking to the Y-Wing and am fond of the X-Wing.  Y-Wing is solid for hitting targets, with good shields and a decent payload.  It's not as tricky as the B-Wing in power management either.  The X-Wing boasts good shield, speed and maneuverability with a solid punch.  For The Empire, the TIE Interceptor and the Assault Gunboat are my picks.  The TIE Interceptor for the simple fact that it is so fast and maneuverable, and it packs a wallop.  The Assault Gunboat is a solid platform, with decent payload.  Plus I like it's looks. :)

The X-wing was always my favorite ship. Except for the E-wing in X-Wing: Alliance (though you need a fan patch for that one). That thing is a BEAST.

SWTOR just released what they call an expansion and added PvP space combat, very similar to what Star Wars Attack Squadron will be.

And I'm sure it's just as well thought-out as was space combat in Galaxies.
