I don't understand what they were thinking, although I am pretty sure the whole reason for the 4 door was  they had contracts with police....AFAIK

The STi is quick and offers reasonably good handling. However, my '86 Shelby GLHS, upgraded to the 225 hp 2.5L engine would lean all over it. One advantage the STi has is the all wheel drive, really helps from standing starts. The Sti weighs in at 3,444 lbs. That's pretty darn heavy for the power. My GLHS tipped the scales at 2,217 lbs. That means that the STi has a power to weight ratio of 11.3 lb/hp. Very good, but no match for the old Shelby at 9.85 lb/hp. My WRX was tame in comparison. Tame and not even close to the GLHS in terms of hustling around a road course. Shelby simply built a street legal race car, at a time when the fastest cars offered by other US car makers were not very impressive. This little Shelby had a very hard edge on it. Not for the nervous types.

Shelby built just 500 of these little monsters, and less than 300 survive. Originally fitted with a 175 hp 2.2L, intercooled turbo motor, they were one of the fastest cars you could buy in 1986. Three years later, I upgraded to the new 225 hp engine. I sold it not many years ago. It had few rivals... The ultimate sleeper. Hot Rod magazine tested it in 1986, with Shelby on hand. Shelby invited the SoCal Shelby club to come out with their hot rodded GT-350s. They were beaten by the little GLHS. If you can find one in decent shape, buy it. You can't go faster for less $$$.

I know the STi is heavy, just a little less then my original challenger at 3600+ but man you cant tell....I was very impressed with it....at the speeds it could take turns and the breaking ability was off the charts...going from my challenger to that thing was a whole new ball game.

the guy who owned it never took it over 100.....the first time I took it out with him in the passenger seat lt saw 100 in second gear

I drove it in a small town in NH with some real nice long back roads.....I put it to the test

Those things were great. Imagine an Omni tearing you a new one lol. And they, along with the Rabbit GTI and Charger 2.2,were steps in the right direction yet got halted until Ford came out recently with the Focus ST. First thing I thought of was the little GLH. Europe has been making these "hot hatches" for some time but they never really took hold here. I was hopinf the ST was going to push that a bit.

Great car Widewing, I always wanted one of them, same as the Ford Shogun - small cars re-purposed into monsters, it's a strange attraction.  Hope you kept it.

Ammo, do you have any videos with the new car?  Your old ones from Germany were great, I'd love to take the GTR there someday, or something even faster.

Ammo, do you have any videos with the new car?  Your old ones from Germany were great, I'd love to take the GTR there someday, or something even faster.

Not yet -  I need a mounting bracket for my GoPro.  I wished I'd had the camera mounted this past summer - had some great experiences rolling around the area.  Two new M5s, a few 911s, a GT3RS, a car like your wifes, and a bunch more.

I just installed a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s on the car and wow what a great winter tire.  The car is absolutely drivable with these shoes in this abysmal weather.

Reeling in a boosted GSXR1000 my brother in law has.  Eats me on the launch but not for long, even with a 120lb passenger.

I always laugh at the "snow" button on the GTR.  It actually says that - "SNOW", right on the dash button.  Nearly 600 BHP factory and Z rated tires, and "SNOW" is it?  Even with AWD, I still think even putting the same tire you put on yours would be dodgy up here, we get a lot of snow and ice.  I would consider it stock, but not now, the "SNOW" button and close to 900whp..not so much.  The little Nissan Juke with AWD and studded winters or our Duramax is the current winter car, but I would love a decent luxury/sports 4 door with winters, even one of the new ecoboost Mustangs might not be a bad winter car with the right tires.  We'll see.
