27" Asus 144 Hz FreeSync Monitor on NewEgg

This looks like a terrific gaming monitor:

Asus says the monitor has Freesync technology, but I though Freesync was all on the AMD GPU and any monitor with a DisplayPort 1.2 would work with it.  I wasn't aware there was any technology that needed to be built into the monitor?
