We're missing something, because AH is the best game as far as mechanics and elements. So, why does it always come down to the strats?

I mean, they're strats. They're supposed to be 'strategic targets', that's where 'strats' come from, right? Why are they really not so strategic to 'winning the war'? I think there's just not a whole lot of gameplay involving the supposed strategic targets, and not a great deal of reward from it (outside of perks).

One of my favorite memories from AH is hitting one of the old strats when they were scattered about, flying a low strike run with a dude in a B-25s, dropping bombs, finding a surprise train on egress, and making strafing runs to destroy it before it reached the strat.

I think now that the graphics overhaul is mostly complete, a couple more months of bug squashing and element refining are in order, and then we can think about overhauling and refining the strategic aspect of Aces High.

It seems that limiting the enemy's defensive and offensive resources for extended time periods must have some strategic value in "winning the war".

The strats are strategic to winning the war, just not single finger salute, screw a whole country for the rest of the night important. When players complain in here about strats not giving them a bang for their buck by doing something strategically important for all of their bomber efforts against the strats. They only start talking compromise on that idea towards the end of multiple pages of negative responses to the idea of one player with a box of bombers having a strategic impact on everyone in a country's "FUN" for the night.

You watched the outcome of that when the 49ers decided to make the community whine here in the forums. In response, Hitech voted for the fun of the majority of his paying customers with a change in their favor. Strat has a mild effect on game play that players adapt to on the fly if it's only the resource strats. Combining taking the city down with the resource strats multiply's the rebuild time if no one resupply's the resource strats or the city. ENY is despised more at that point than inconveniences from waiting for ords or fuel to rebuild. Still, AAA and town rebuild is effected, and our players continue to fumble the ball with that advantage taking bases.

Right now placing the resource strats within easy access is a good terrain design strategy to create combat where the largest number of players can easily participate. The strats and their current inconvenience when down is proportional to the low numbers in the arena. If single finger salutes were given the power those complaining about strats wanted, the arena does not have the man power for the game to be "FUN" while everyone repairs the damage one bomber driver could do. And like the 49ers did, do it all night long just as the players finished repairing the damage. Players were logging out of the game because of that. The Fester terrain by it's design as an accident showcased the worst case scenario of single player, single finger salute multiplied by the membership of a squad.

With this terrain I'm building I've made it possible for bombers to hide behind the primary caldera wall mountain range without triggering the off map arrow. Then they can sneak up on the HQ and city at about 20k to single finger them to death, then dive off at speed to return to their country. That mountain range wall is 18-23k high with passes through it. Or they can NOE the whole way on the inside of the mountain range without triggering radar rings along the way until they hit the two un-capturable feilds.

No matter what anyone does for the bomber guys, the heart of their complaint is they want their single finger salute to seriously cripple something important for their 1-2 hour effort. When the 49ers did that, people logged out of the arena.

This is like the old joke that voters are harsher to their beer brewer if he has an outage, than their politicians after raising their taxes. Death and taxes are certain but, fun and sex is only now.
