MIcrosoft to cut support in Windows 10 for older hardware.
« on: July 21, 2017, 09:07:23 AM »
It has been no big secret Windows 10 did not run on older hardware, from the onset, but this is different.

Many people do not think this is a big deal, but I thought I would share it in the interest of keeping everyone up to date on the ever changing Windows 10 landscape.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3209705/windows/confirmed-windows-10-will-cut-off-devices-with-older-cpus.html

I know if an operating system arbitrarily told me it was not going to allow updates anymore, I would be all over Linux.

Many people do not think this is a big deal, but I thought I would share it in the interest of keeping everyone up to date on the ever changing Windows 10 landscape.

99% of the computer using population are nieve and put to much trust in thinking Microsoft is looking out for their users best interests.... Microsoft has been sharing the bed with Big Brother every since they cut a deal with the US government lawsuit against them over a decade ago. Then Microsoft started buying up farm land in Redmond, WA to build all those massive Server warehouses just for this "Windows 10 Service" , instead of having dedicated Operating systems.....

One day it's going to come to a point that if you are not able to pay for your "Service" monthly fee, Microsoft will flip the switch cutting you off from accessing your life! ( read as being cut off from internet, bank access, and/or many other things people need to survive/exist like utilities, etc)....  This has been in the works for years and the tipping point grows closer with each new update....

There will come a time when all your files, data, pictures, etc will be stored online or like the Cloud or Google Drive, with the only way to access your personal life is to pay for it through something like MS Windows 10 service, with everything like your financial, medical, utilities, etc, either being able to access it or be denied access to it at the discretion of MS/Big Brother etc.....

No I'm not paranoid... just stating the obvious that 99+% are to nieve to see, realize or bother with....

Just my view of the fish bowl
"When one considers just what they should say to a new pilot who is logging in Aces High, the mind becomes confused in the complex maze of info it is necessary for the new player to know. All of it is important; most of it vital; and all of it just too much for one brain to absorb in 1-2 lessons" TC

Planned obsolescence has been in the works for a long time.  This actually serves to keep Intel and AMD from developing Linux any further as they see it as a chance to sell more hardware.  It is a big win for Microsoft.

There will be a lot of explanations forthcoming from people on how this is not a big deal.  Apple users are already used to it so why not?

And yes TC, there are plenty of people who think anyone who says anything bad about Microsoft is just paranoid.

This sort of thing is why a lot of people, including me, left Apple years ago, but it reminds me of the '80. "No one ever got fired for choosing IBM."
We had alternatives in the past but even if one should develop, the way things are going we won't be able to download it after the new 'open web' legislation coming from the FCC. So yep, I'm paranoid.

Yes, using WINE, but it's not as hardware friendly as Windows. That means reduced eye candy and low frame rates.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

I think it is good point to start porting AH graphics engine to OpenGL and building platform independent code  ;)

I agree to run AH native in Linux would be  very good.

Linux is not a good platform for games.  Sorry, but that is just the truth.  It lacks a cohesive support system for all the resources games need and is inconsistent from version to version.

Personally, I like Linux, but it is difficult to provide an installer, for a game, which will work across all the different distributions.

I hope this will change. :old:

I have been waiting for it to change, for a very long time.

Once in a while, there is a glimmer of hope and then it dies on the vine again.

Actually, IMHO support problem is somewhat overrated. There are hundreds of various significant proprietary projects running on Linux without an issue. Supporting Linux would be actually simpler that Windows since it is much more transparent system. Not talking about various Windows specific issues like terrible scheduler, AV programs (that BTW was 90% of support I asked on this forum) and more.

What is real problem is lack of support of Linux by major game hardware vendors, for example get Track IR or Oculus Rift working on Linux - nothing close there.

Artik, I have to disagree.  If you look at the top 10 distributions of Linux, you will find multiple installation methods, multiple path differences, multiple graphic 3D API's (assuming there is one, XWindows, Mir, Wayland...) and do not get me started on the audio API nightmare.

It is a grab bag for a game to deal with.  Even the game ported to Linux are very picky about which distribution they will run on.

It is just not workable, unless you pick one distribution and stick with it which limits you to a smaller segment of the small Linux market.

What about moving to Vulkan?  At least that would pre-position you for a move to Linux in whole or part were it needed or wanted down the road.

I think Vulkan merits a look IF we ever decide to support Linux, natively.
