Depending on where you planned your long cross country fuel availability was sometimes an issue in the 70s.  Or you would fly by your original airport and track back an forth to build miles.

Alaska/Bush pilots are a different breed than we CONUS pukes. 

Was at an AOPA seminar once, where the straight-faced speaker related that the FAA had great plans for Alaska's pilots:  By 2020 the FAA anticipated that 50% of them would have Private Pilot certificates.

But then on the other side of that coin post 9-11 Alaska GA VCR traffic was back in the air.  In fact my old drop zone flew skydiving loads that weekend.  Just too many people here depend on the single engine airplane to simply maintain life.   We might end up flying on a Pvt ticket but we'll still be flying.

My Dad worked for CAA in Juneau and Fairbanks 1957 to 1962 as a general aviation safety inspector and always had lots of stories about people operating commercially on a student permit. Some flying charters to lower 48 even.
