There are far more warbirds in flying condition now than at any time in history.

Seriously?  I bet there were far far more during WWII.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Black Sheep was actually quite good.  It had in-cockpit helmet cameras and the like, things that were unheard of in the 1970s.

I’ll take Black Sheep over CGI any day.

Midway remains one of my all-time favorite films.

Don't remember any "in-cockpit helmet cameras" shots. What I do recall is that all shots of the cast characters in a cockpit were shot from just outside the cockpit. When the characters pulled either a barrel roll and loop, the dynamics were simulated the same way: the camera, 90-degrees to one side of the other and pointed at the pilot character, would be rolled 360 degrees about the lens' axis. Don't get me wrong...I loved the show. I'm just saying, there was very little contemporary-shot footage of aircraft. Mostly just the taking off, landing, and taxiing.

Those were not warbirds.  Those were in-service military/combat aircraft.   Different thing entirely.

A warbird is a vintage/surplus (former) military airplane maintained/restored to flying condition for non-combat, non-active duty purposes (aerial display, filming, personal use, etc.).

The airplanes used by the military during WWII were not warbirds at the time, nor are any presently flown by the military.  The exception is the BBMF and the like, rare instances where an active air arm flies vintage airplanes for historical purposes.

Just because you do not remember it doesn’t mean it wasn’t done.

And there was a LOT of footage beyond taxi, takeoff, and landing.    It was expensive to obtain and often reused, but there is a lot of it.

funny, I never thought of Bruce Willis as an actor in a WWII movie.
I don't care if it is CGI. it's still a WWII movie and it has action or is it a pre-WWII movie. :airplane:

LOL the YouTube comment that Bruce Willis has become Nicolas Cage.  Nicolas Cage could have pulled off some of those lines, he'd make the bad movie good.
here here-or is it hear hear- Nick Cage is one of my Favorite actors

No, but if I want to watch a cartoon I'll break out ROBOTECH.

CGI sucks.  It looks like crap and ruins the movie.   My gosh, FLYING TIGERS in 1942 used models and did a better job than CGI does.

Robotech is a great series

in the movie-Dunkirk-the used large RC models for the HE111's and the Stukas--
the 109's were actually Spanish Casa-1112 Buchons--and 109's yellow Cowling didn't come in until month's later

Not true actually.   There are far more warbirds in flying condition now than at any time in history.

You guys are misunderstanding Vraciu and nitpicking semantics.

There are more flyable warbirds (mostly fighters) than since about the 1980s.    Unlimited and lower class racing has inspired people to restore fighters that were nothing but balled up metal into flyable machines.     Sure, they aren't "stock" but often end up being sold and are restored to factory condition and often in the colors it used during the war........or wearing famous plane colors.

Many of the planes restored for racing would never have been restored if not for racing.

That said, if you like vintage sports cars and want to restore one, I've found that vintage race cars that have sat for many years are often the best place to start for a restoration since the pool of original cars has shrunk so much as of late.
