Unable to open setting message
« on: September 25, 2018, 11:40:49 AM »
Have started playing again recently from a 4 year hiatus. Downloaded game 3 times and game kept crashing when loading terrain. Loaded it the 4th time and all seemed well. When the terrain changed a few minutes ago, I am having the same problem again. When clip board pops up I get "Unable to open setting/login.cfg.  Then when I try to enter Open melee I get "Lost connection to file server while downloading ah3terr/grinder.res

Any help would be appriciated.

A copy of the first third of a DXdiag posted here would help.

Definitely need to see that DXDIAG output.  You can post it as an attachment (expand the "Attachments and other options" below the bulletin board edit box).  That way you do not have to edit it.

Thanks for the help. I reinstalled the game and it ran fine. Overnight it lost connection and the same thing is happening again. I attached the requested info.

On a quick glimpse I could find a few issues.

First, the game doesn't run well on an Intel graphics chip integrated with the processor.
Second, you only have 4 GB of RAM, a significant part of which is used for the graphics. Not only does this reduce your RAM for running Windows and the programs within, it also is much slower than the dedicated video memory on separate video cards.
Third, your page file is pretty huge. It may be due to you not having rebooted prior to running DxDiag. It also may have to do with the power management settings. By default they're not optimal for gaming.

An All-in-one PC is not the best choice for any gaming other than Tetris or the likes, there's just too little space for the hardware needed.

CD? If you mean the CD player device, no. If you mean a certain CD platter, there's no disk that would improve anything.

If your Internet connections were so slow that downloading the game would take hours, then the CD might help. Also, if you were using a metered connection, the CD would save you some money by eliminating corrupted downloads. In either case you would most likely be unable to play.

There's a few things you can do to improve the performance of your system. The first thing is to use another browser than Chrome for downloading as it may corrupt the download. If you're already using Firefox or Edge, you should have at least one working installation package in your Downloads folder. That's exactly the same thing that HTC has on the CD.

Also, check the Power Management tips by Skuzzy: https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,71591.msg5141230.html#msg5141230

Aside of those, still in Additional Power Settings, go to the "Choose what the power button does" link in the left pane. Click "change settings that are currently unavailable" and uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" to get a fresh start at every boot.

unfortunately what he is saying is you dont have a good enough video card to run the game. Your computer is using an Intel graphics processor with doesn't work well with 3d games. turning all the graphics down may not get the game to run on your system

There are multiple problems with that computer which are going to prevent the game from running reliably.

1)  The 4GB of system memory is simply not enough for Windows 10.  4GB is just enough for Windows 10, but it does not allow any free RAM for the game to load and run well.

2)  The Intel video chip has 112MB of dedicated RAM available to it.  The game requires a minimum of 256MB of dedicated video RAM.  The result of the lack of RAM is going to cause the video card driver to steal away more system RAM which is already in short supply.

Simply put.  The limited system RAM is causing a cascade failure of resources.

Even if you could solve the limited RAM issue, the Intel HD graphics processor does not have enough graphics power to run the graphics of the game without a lot of stutters and micro pauses.

Wish I had better news.

Appreciate the help. Will check the items that were brought up.  Why does the game run fine until connection is lost? I uninstall and download again and it is fine. Only asking as I am not up to date on this stuff.

If you turn down all the settings, it should run.  How well it runs will be up to your expectations.

With the limited system RAM it has no chance of being stable.  Lost connections and a malady of other problems could happen, all related to the lack of system RAM.

When you get into resource related problems, all bets are off.

Yeah I can't imagine seeing anything but a slide show on that rig even with everything dialed down to minimums. That's a web surfing/office tools rig.
