There really was no set way of doing those IFF markings, was there? Strange the Germans weren't more strict about it given the idea was for everyone to know the plane was one of theirs. Sadly RAF skins of this period have a lot less interesting divergences from the norm.

I think it was more a case of throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. Some units were even experimenting with white markings instead of yellow. The yellow cowl and rudder wasn't settled on until around mid-September.

Also, I agree with your sentiment on the sameness of the RAF markings. You'll occasionally see a different colored spinner, but generally, they're the same apart from the squadron codes.
