SU-27 and F-15 near miss
« on: January 31, 2019, 10:59:38 AM »
What would you have done if you were in the F-15? F-15 was more professional than the reckless Russian but still seems he got owned. Or just plain refused to stay engaged. But it put him in the sights of the Russian. If the Russian had stupidly just fired guns the F-15 pilot would be in a parachute. It's only a clip and not a video of the whole engagement. I hope the F-15 already knew he was there. Also noted that the SU-27's camo seemed much better. Practically disappeared.

Supposedly (if not fake) happened in 2017. A Russian Air Force Su-27P fighter jet (from 72nd Guards AvB according to articles) and a US F-15C of 493rd Fighter Squadron while it was patrolling over Baltic Sea.

My first impression was FAKE.

But whatever.   Context is everything and we have none.

Don't forget...... who was filming this engagement. Obviously another aircraft.

Exactly.   This was a formation not an engagement as suggested by the OP.

It's happened before over the baltic...

Also why is it a near miss, isn't it a near hit?

Nearly

Actually you always see russians jinking to slosh the fuel and get that last little bit they need to finish mission.

It looks like the F-15 intercepted a Bear and the Su-27 gently persuaded the F-15 away.

No way to tell that here unfortunately.

The Eagle driver did what was expected.   Don't make a bad day fatal unless absolutely necessary.

Also, if this was an actual intercept you can rest assured his wingman and possibly two other Eagles were in the “murderer’s spot” behind that Flanker.

those stunts, movies and articles are for internal russian consumption.

Russian citizen will accept lack of freedom, opportunity, control over his own life  <enter here number of other things we take for granted > in return for perception of respect from other nations. It's a reminiscences of empire surfs looking for self respect.

This is simply formation formation flying off of a third aircraft.  There was no “engagement” involved.

Well, since I actually flew F-15s..

Looks to me like the F-15 was rejoining on the aircraft with the camera, and the SU-27 flew up in-between them forcing the F-15 to veer away.  The SU-27 followed forcing it to what looks to me like 500-1000 ft separation.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Always good to get your input.

I did a bit searching, and it turns out the aircraft performing the photography was a Russian transport with VIPs onboard.  Like you said, the Su-27 wanted the F-15 to maintain some separation to prevent any chance of a mid-air.

You’re confusing a similar intercept by F-16s.

The Russians do this stuff all the time.   It’s a nothingburger .   The F-15 pilot acted appropriately.
