The $4.8 trillion (in 2020 dollars) spent on WWII resulted in:

141 aircraft carriers
8 battleships
48 cruisers
349 destroyers
498 escorts
203 submarines
34 million tonnes of merchant ships
35,000 heavy bombers
62,000 light-medium bombers
100,000 fighter planes
2 million trucks
12 million rifles
2.8 million machine guns
2 million sub-machine guns
260,000 artillery guns
88,000 tanks

As well as huge amounts of ammo, bombs, raw materials, fuel, oil, food, supplies, etc.

now that is a better analogy.

You forgot the Manhattan project.

Just curious...

What was the cost of WWII relative to 1944 GDP  vs this $4tn relative to our $20.58tn GDP today?

It's not the raw dollar amounts that matter, it's how it sits in proportion to your wealth.  Bill Gates Can throw $100k around like beer money.  To me that's a serious sum of money.  We have different levels of wealth.

I suspect WWII was a much larger percentage of the 1944 GDP than this $4tn is to our GDP today.

But better measure against the GDP at the beginning of 2020 not the end.  ;)

(I'm not necessarily defending the stimulus bill.  I haven't read it.  But numbers must be respected.  ;))

My point:  $4 trillion is *a lot* of money.  I was giving some comparisons of other things in 2020 dollars -- which is one completely standard metric in economics.

If you want to compare a list of things as % of GDP, go for it.  That is also a completely standard metric in economics.

You could also compare things as % of median household income, or % of average individual income, or PPP, or lots of other ways -- all of them completely standard and usual, but all of which are measuring somewhat different things (which is why there are all those measurements used, not just one).

For example, % GDP is often used when the focus is on nations and current$ is often used when the focus is on individuals.  A Big Mac today is 2.8e-11% of US GDP but was 5.2e-11% of GDP in 1968.  The nation as an entity is getting a better deal on Big Macs today.  But is the individual getting a better deal on it today?  Today's Big Mac is $5.80 in 2020 dollars, and 1968's Big Mac was $3.64 in 2020 dollars.  Even if we look at median household income, a Big Mac today is 9.2e-5 times household income; and in 1968, it was 6.9e-5 times household income.  Either way, 1968 was a better deal on Big Macs for the individual.

Anyway, $4 trillion is *a lot*.  You and I can use whatever standard metric we want to compare it to other things.

And it seems its looking for stupid people, those not observing 6 ft. Might end up being a better world afterall.

So how does it work if you are over 6ft tall?  do you have to leave 12ft space?

Be safe, wash your hands and face.

Yes, I get it.  It's a lot of money.

Current GDP and the beginning of the year was $20tn.  Goldman Sachs is predicting a 24% drop in Q2 alone.  That's a lot of money too.

It's times like these that we should whip out the credit card and throw money around.  Like we did in WWII.  There are times when you shouldn't try and nickle and dime things.  Times like this.  This is the big one.  This is the Big Kahuna.

My problem is that they keep throwing money around when times are good and the economy cooking.  That's when you should pay off the credit card.  (e.g. I agreed with the bailouts in 2008, but by 2012 they should have been turning off the spigot and paying things down.)

But to suggest you shouldn't utilize all your assets in an emergency, would just be cutting off your nose to spite your face.

On the bright side, I suspect that before this thing is over, our national debt and the Fed money printing will be the last worries on your mind.  ;)

Another comparison for scale....

There are perfectly reasonable estimates that if we don't get a handle on this, it could result in a death count greater than the total combat deaths the US has suffered in every military conflict since the Revolutionary war combined.

Maybe twice as many.  Even the CDC's own models had a worse case upper bound of 1.2m.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_casualties_of_war

I don't think we'll get to that.  The country is slowly shaking off the "It's just the Flu, Bruh!" mentality and taking this seriously.  Well, except for Shuffler.

Trips

Quite right about the total deaths of US wars vs Kung Flu projections..
Listening to Talk Radio, I'm not very optimistic, a lot of chest beaters out there..
I don't think they WANT to accept what is happening, like they are in a denial bubble..
Some in the "Patriot Media" aren't helping matters either.. Virus doesn't hear USA USA USA..

See the video of the Amazon delivery guy, intentionally spitting on a Package???
My Nephew the UPS worker, said they have 2 people tested positive for Kung Flu..
Many have been sick but are still working.. This is NOT GOOD,

"secret spreaders" is the polite name for em.. I just call em 2 legged Plague Rats..
Even way out here, they are just bringing it right to us!

Other things we noticed..
We haven't received any regular mail in 3 days, haven't seen the USPS truck..
And the semi daily Sheriff's cruiser that would drive up the valley road,
and turn around at the Forest Service gate, and then go back down..
Haven't seen him in a week either..

Gettin kinda Twilight Zone around here..
