Ukrainian/Russian dogfight
« on: February 24, 2022, 02:32:47 PM »
This is a post on Twitter of a partial video of a supposedly a Ukrainian Mig-29 fighting a Russian Su-35. The poster stated wrong the positions. The Ukrainian is high. You can tell by the blue/white camo when he rolls to look at his prey. Then the SU-35 in a darker camo goes by low. The Ukrainian rolls twice to get in position behind the Russian. How do you think this played out? Was the Mig able to get behind the SU? There may have already been smoke coming out of the SU-35 or just jet exhaust. The Russian staying low I think was hoping the Ukrainian would lose sight of him in the 'grass'. Hard battle for Ukraine but they are fighting. Same poster had shots of a downed Russian helo and some destroyed vehicles.

You'll want to maximize the video. I've had at least 1 response on Twitter say that they're both Ukrainian Mig-29's???

Pitiful but I'm sorry... the U.S. has no obligation to defend Ukraine
b/c they are not a member of NATO... other than supply arms... now if Russia
attacks a NATO country, then we are obligated

Definitely both MiG-29's and based on how they are flying, It's safe to say that they are on the same side.

How does one distinguish between a Mig 29 and a Mig 35? I thought they were more or less the same airframe with the Mig 35 having an upgraded airframe and upgraded avionics and weapon systems. Those things dont exactly stand out unless you have a look underneath the hood. Any Mig drivers out there that can enlighten us?

I agree that those two look like they are on the same team.

Su-35 not MiG-35

Yes, the MiG-35 is a thing, and you are right about the differences between the -29 and -35.

But this twitter post says it's a Ukrainian MiG-29 vs. Russian Su-35

Yes, both top of the line fighters in the MiG and Sukhoi lines are both numbered 35 and derived from earlier types.

MiG-29 --> MiG-35
Su-27 --> Su-35

This is what I was thinking. I read the post thinking some intense fighter action was taking place. However, 5 seconds of low level slow flight with no snap maneuvers, while both planes look almost identical, Indicate cap style flying.

Looks like they ate being vectored for an intercept.  But that is all supposition on my part.

It looks like an overhead rejoin. High guy doing some s turns to join up with the low guy. Definitely doesn't look like they're fighting.

My thought also.  Looks more like a tactical rejoin headed to the next engagement.
