Understanding the clipboard map
« on: April 13, 2025, 06:19:39 AM »
Hi, I'd like an explanation on what the icons on the clipboard map actually mean.

Primarily, what do the coloured squares mean? I assumed these were radar pings, but aircraft on radar show up as a plane symbol, so what do they mean?

The colored squares (or rectangles) in the upper left corner of a map sector indicate that there are enemy (or friendly) aircraft in that sector flying over 200ft above ground level.  The larger the rectangle, the more planes in the sector. If you haven't reset the map colors, those "Sector Counters" or "Bar Dar" will be red (enemy) or green (friendly).  Remember, the aircraft can be anywhere in the  map sector -- not just in the top left corner where the colored square is.   (Map sectors are 25 miles square and are outlined in white, with coordinates in the lower left corner.)

The red squares that can appear anywhere in a sector are "Vehicle Sectors" that indicate there are one (or more) enemy vehicles within the square.  The Vehicle Sectors DO indicate the approximate location of the vehicle, but not the number of vehicles in the square.  (You can enable/disable the Vehicle Sectors by right-clicking the map and checking the appropriate box.)  On water, the Vehicle Sectors indicate the approximate location of an enemy LVT or PT Boat.

Fugitive has a lot of good information, and has very kindly included the tutorial I wrote some time ago.  The specific page having to do with the maps is here:

Check out the rest of his web site. You will find some very good information there.

Thank you so much. that makes a lot more sense now. Turns out I was a dumbarse and had never noticed they were always in the top left of a grid square.

Also thank you Fugitive for the link to your website, it's already been immediately helpful in that the first thing I saw was how to access field maps, which the apparent lack of was something that had been bugging me. gonna have to bookmark your website

Correction, your not a dumbarse!!!
It’s a complicated game and questions are free!
Ask as many as you like. That could include “how to I start the engine?” ,apologies for my ‘humor’ though.
