PC Games versus XBox? Playsation?
« on: January 31, 2002, 11:54:35 PM »
Ok, I'm wondering what the differences are between say Madden 2002 for my PC and Madden 2002 say for Sony Playstation 2 (or Xbox).  I would think that the game should be better on my PC as I am running a P4 1.8 which is certainly faster than the processor on the Xbox or Playstation 2?

My question is what are the differences?  Are games just as enjoyable on a PC these days as they are on a Playstation 2?  I've always had a Playstation or Sega or whatnot, but I've never played the same games on a PC.  Just like to hear what any of ya'll might have to say :)

Had 'em all in the house... XBox, PS2, Nintendo 64...

Biggest difference? Input devices. The graphics aren't what make them fun.

Four controllers and a big screen beat the hell outta playing 1v1 or 1vAI on a PC.

Of course, if you have your CPU output to a large screen and you're running multiple gamepads, it might be as good.

I worked for Electronics Boutique for years, so I understand the dilemma you are facing.

As a computer guy, the idea of buying a console is great.  Buy game, insert game, games runs just as good on your system as your best friend's.

With PCs, have friends over, show them Aces High on your system...and exhibit how nicely it plays on a P3 550 at 12 FPS.  Then, see it on their Athlon 1.6ghz system with 64mb video card and ponder which organs you can sell and survive without in order to get such amazing performance :)

If you like games like Madden or any of he arcade games, consoles are awesome.  If you are solely into flight sims, as I am, they are a big, expensive paperweight.

I bought my N64 for Zelda and the flight thing...I had to remove it from my living room since my girlfriend bought all these "Yoshi" games.  She'd play them for hours, then later, I'd catch my self humming the stupid nursery-school like tunes from the silly game.  (If you've played the Yoshi game, you know the one....la..la-la-la..la..)

Oh dammit.  I'm hearing music in my head.

Anyways, you get the idea.

picked up the "Advanced A/V" hookup for my son's Xbox yesterday so we could hook up the digital audio for the 5.1 surround sound feature.

Awesome !!

Dont have Madden but NFL Fever is a blast

I still like the PC platform best.  I like to be able to tweak and tune my games.  With consoles you get no custom sound, or skins (not even that old tomb-raider mod that makes Laura nekid) no custom anything and no patches for upgrades

So ... If I am wanting to play golf, football, or anything else just me versus the computer ... then the PC is just as good as the console?

i think so.  the one big advantage to console though is you never have hardware conflict where the game just wont play on your system

I think PC games are better as far as overall quality.  But, for arcade type action, a console is the best.  Madden 2002 is really awesome especially on a big screen and full surround sound.  I can't see it being as fun to play on a PC.  Final Fantasy X is pretty damn cool too.  :)

Superfly how is final fantasy X?  Am thinking of getting a ps2 so i can play it.

Final fantasy X aint out in the Uk yet, should be out soon tho.

Consoles are fun, had some great times with the N64.  After a night out  with my mates we would usually crash back at my house playing multiplayer Golden eye until the early ours of the morning.  Even when blind drunk i would still beat them at it :D

Consoles are just so much easier to use, i couldn't imagine them coming over now crowded round my pc.  Having to reboot the computer, deal with errors, blue screen of death etc.  It's just so much less hassle with a console.  The great thing about consoles ins that u plug it in and play.

However i bought a PC especially for Rogue Spear and now i'm a PC addict:)

Most games are as good or better on the PC, but as you brought up Madden 2002, I have to say, its much better on the console (i have the ps2 version). On the whole I have found sports games to be more fun on the console, but most other games I prefer on the PC.

Hehe ... I'm a poor law graduate, no real big screen TV in the living room to enjoy :D  Hell my monitor, 21" is almost as big as my 27" TV :)

I'll check a few out and see how it goes.

Nim, the PC versions are just as good as the console versions, IMO.  especially if you're a soccer fan.  FIFA on the PC rules, because users make all sorts of rosters, tournaments, kits, balls, shoes, stadiums, etc that you can download and use with your game.  It was just too cool to get a realistic looking Newcastle kit to use.

EA is pretty good about doing roster updates during the season as well (if you like to play along with the actual players on the actual teams during a season.)  3D0 updates the high heat baseball rosters twice during the season usually.  Drawback here is the official updates only are for the most current product.  You won't find 2001 season updates for the version that came out in 2000, for example.  However, the user mods usually keep on coming.

I've got two gravis gamepads, so I can play cooperatively or competitively against a human.  Also, there's net play to be had (tho not sure how lag would be...)

That being said, I have a PS2 for NCAA Football 2002.  Why?  Because they didn't make a PC version.  ;)  I enjoy it on the PS2, but Madden 2001 on my PC rig looks better, and has more options (in terms of making plays, changing hot routes, but that might not be true vs the PS2 version of Madden 2001.)

If all the games you want to play have a PC version, there's no reason to go out and drop $200 on a console, then $60 on a game.  Usually the PC versions of the games are cheaper by a few $.

Anyways, see if you can rent a PS2 and a few games from Blockbuster or something.  Give you a chance to try it out.  :)

It's simple really, XBox/Playstation are great to play with your friends and get into tournaments and stuff. Like Gameday2k2, kicks bellybutton because you can play guys just sitting there and talking smack to 'em. You can't really do that over the internet (unless you been playing together for years ;-), without someone getting all upity.

I think Halo is better on the XBox than it would of been on the PC(it was originally intended for the PC), simply because if you play coop, you can run through the game and talk to your buddy next to you while you are running through the level. It makes for coordinating stuff easier.

I don't own either the XBox or PS2, but I play 'em at my friend's house a lot. They are a lot of fun, and much different than the PC. But in terms of what would you have more fun with... that all depends if you like playing your friends without buying 4+ PCs to link up.
