Woudnt HT have to distribute it as an open product then..we would have to compile it ourselves and we would be able to re-distribute it? that would be cool...

No that only applies to Linux and wats normally packaged with it or is already under the GPL. You can create your own software that runs on Linux and own the license just like any other shink wrap software package. So in that case HT would actually own the software nobody gets the code.

Compatability would be a nightmare... as well as future vid card support.

But it would scream... and host a web site... at the same time. ;)

AH already works under Linux with transgaming, although not perfectly.  If I were HT I would stick to working on Windows only--means faster updates for us. ;)  But, if he could smooth a few things out so AH worked perfectly under transgaming, that would be a major bonus.

Here's a HOWTO conway wrote on the subject:

I once thought it would be a good idea but it was pointed out to me that most Linux users interested in games are running Linux as a secondary OS to Windows so its kinda pointless...cool but pointless. iEN already struggle to maintain Warbirds on the PC and MAC platform and constantly blame the MAC for slowing down progress....is that what we want here? We'd certainly loose some of the nicer features like the vox which is built on DX8. Keep AH on one platform, its worked well this far for HTC so why rock the boat for little reason?

..."little reason?"

Hmmmm.... Being able to run a Microsoft free home/office is not a little reason.  Especially with the new MS license agreements. I agree with senna when he said......

"But, if he could smooth a few things out so AH worked perfectly under transgaming, that would be a major bonus."

I would dump MS and load Linux in a heartbeat if AH ran well under transgaming.
