Is the CC registration in AH secure ?
« on: January 30, 2000, 05:57:00 AM »
Felt in the mood for registration yesterday, but then i saw the other post here about card registration over the net.

In the browsers there are some security stuff, but what about the registration in the front end of AH ? And if it is secure, is it according to any banking/card standards for security or something ?

Is via the front end the only way to register?  How about fax, phone or email? Or a secure webpage?

How about a phone number, and the call would cost the $30 which would then be added to your telephone bill? ("Hi neighbour, can I make a quick phonecall from your phone? My wife has been talking on the phone for the past few hours, and I have a really important call to make...")

Why the worry over whether a website is 'secure'?

How many times do you hand your card over in a store or restaurant complete with a signature on it and not worry about who sees the slip afterwards?

Give me a website any time.

In addition to Glars comments, I'd like to also add that even if any fraud did occur, you are only responsible for $50 bucks if someone decides to use your CC.

I wish that was true, but according to my bank/CC supplyer, any transaction with CC over the net has to be secure, or it will all be on my own responsibility.

Besides sending my CC number from Norway to Texas via about 20 hops where any hacker wannabe can get it is a bit more risky than going to a resteurant.

I am in the business of network security. The primary concern in cc fraud is not that a hacker will intercept and obtain cc number, but it is the ultimate destination. In other words, who are you giving your cc number to? Do you trust them? How secure are they in handling your information that they got legitimately.

Pagan,

I agree with you on the ones TRUST in the receiver of the CC number, BUT as for the hacker breaking in... WELL that IS the big concern.  The reason beeing, MYSELF and about 1000 other CC holders had their numbers stolen by a hacker..THEN was posted to a website for people to take.  I had a 10k limit..wiht about 9.5K free. In two days it all disappered to some amazinhunk in Germany.  Lucky my CC company covered for it.

SO online security is a concern incase a hacker does take it.

And as for the earleir posting by GLARS about "what is the big deal,,ya give out your cc everyday to stores with a signature"  The big deal is that I can walk right back to that store and take care of the problem.  On-line, its not that easy. Got to find the place first.  And to make the problem worse, could be Russia.. how the hell you going to solve that problem. Especially if you have a credit/debit card like myself.  Cant send lawyers or police over there.

Just a thought.

Have a nice day.
Gorf

PS it was a very trustworth destination..  it was Amazon.com.

Someone somewhere has gone through the day's transaction slips, photocopied them and has given them to the neighbourhood gang - they're now using your CC number and signature.

How can you track that back to a certain store?

Do you need one-off signatures?

Gorf, I understand your concerns. The type of cc fraud you are speaking of does happen, of course, however, statically speaking (What we suits have to go on   ) the type of fraud I mentioned occurs more frequently and is the PRIMARY concerns of security specialists. Not only can this occur on the internet, but, for example, you use your cc in a department store and the merchant swipes your card through his Verifone terminal and gets an electronic authorization, the entire contents of the mag stripe (card number, expiration date, and DES-encrypted checksum) are sent over the phone at 1200 baud in clear ASCII. So anybody with a $15 Radio Shack tape recorder and a set of clipleads can easily capture every card swiped at a shop or restaurant and then walk home with them on a tape cassette. Your concerns are valid, I just wanted to decrease the fear of using cc's on the net. Hey, I get paid to do it!!

Bod says:

That goes for cards in both Norway and Denmark. My guess is that these countries are not the only ones where the risk is placed at the consumer, if no secure transaction is done.

And yes: the risk *is* small none the less, but that dosent change that companys that live by the internet should live up to its best standarts.

We do not send cc numbers from the client to the host in the clear. But AH's encryption does not have the same level of security as https secure web pages.

We do all transaction processing of Credit Card transaction via secure net connections from our servers.

If you are concerned about the internet transmission of your CC Number feel free to give us your cc number via voice 817-251-1540
