Operating system question

I have 3 options

1. Stick with ME
2. Upgrade to Win 2000 (might be pro ed, need to look at the case again)
------------or---------------
3. Upgrade to Win XP Pro



So what do you recomend I should do?

Go with Win 2k Pro. It was one of the best (once updated with Service Packs) OS's I have ever used. I like some things about WinXP but there are many things I wish were different.

There is no Windows 2000 Home, only Professional. :)

I also recommend Windows 2000 over XP.

a friend of mine has xp pro. i sometimes use his comp. in game and it is the most stable i've personally seen.(and user friendly)

you should definately switch. 2k or XP is just a matter of taste, they will run the same...

hmm, but from what i've heard, win 2000 isn't that good for games

Its BS.

Win2k and WinXP are both very stable platforms.  The only problems I know of with either involve alot of "tampering".

I run Win2K on my server... have been for three years without a problem.  I run XP on my gaming computer.  I've not had a problem with it either.

Win2K does have a different licensing strategy than XP.  That may be something to consider (2Ks is generally considered better since its not "time limited") depending on your application.  I know this makes a difference to Skuzzy.  For me, its not as much of a concern.

2k and XP is based on the same code, which is NT... they are both very alike, the main differences are in GUI...

True Deja, but I have to maintain XP and 2K systems here and much prefer 2K over XP.

XP has enough issues that I would stay with 2K regardless of the licensing.

I've had 3 machines come through my computer room this fall. All 3 were non functional when they brought them in.

2 out of the 3 were older machines that should never have been upgraded from 98SE.

both windows 2k machines were totally messed up trying to run older componants. The ME machine was an all usb POC (USB keyboard = unable to change bios settings).

All three went home with clean installs of Win 98SE, loaded with the best software I could find for them. All ran WAY better on straight win 98 SE than they ever did on Win2k/ME.

My point, if building new system, or buying, then fine, go with XP.

If working with older system with older peripherals, stick with 98. Nothing beats it overall for speed & compatibility.

but i don't have win98, i have me, xp pro (not sure if the cd's working though), and win 2000

Here are my system specs if it might make a difference:
AMD Durron 1.1 ghz
512 mb sdram
Geforce4 440 mx
SB Audigy
30 gig HDD
a really cheap 56k modem

Main use: Games, games, game, and some music and porno


btw, which has better dial-up networking surport, are they about the same?

There are few differences besides the GUI that separate Win2k and WinXP Pro.  WinXP home lacks many features that Win2k has.

WinXP has built in .zip file support and a very basic firewall that Windows 2000 does not have.  The default WinXP gui is also different.  (I personally do not like it.)  Windows XP does boot up faster than Windows 2000.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (or 3) can be made more secure and is IMO more stable than Windows XP.  There are also privacy and licensing issues that I do not care for in Windows XP.  It is essentially a rental OS.

Windows XP and Windows 2000 both run games perfectly fine.  A while back I found an article comparing several games under different OSes.  Overall Windows XP and Windows 2000 were neck and neck and usually slightly faster running newer games than Windows ME.  If I remember where I found that article I will post a link to it.  (I think it was Tom's Hardware.)
