Massive Frame Rate-Drop
« on: February 07, 2003, 08:39:08 AM »
I got a good system:

PIII900
GeForce4 Ti4200 128meg
500megRam

Everything was ok then..bam stuttering and frame-rate crash.  I went to de-frag my hard-drive and it said there was an error that is preventing de-frag.  So I go to scan my hard-drive for errors and its says a program is running preventing system from scanning??  I did Anti-virus check and no viruses.  Whats going on????  Help please......Oh ya-I went to task manager and checked to see whats running.  Well alot of stuff is running. what is supposed to run and what isn't ??

is your anti-V running while you're trying to defrag?

i used to get stuck in a loop when trying to defrag... it the anti-V or the screen saver that was looping it.

do a ctrl-alt-del and see what's running.  something is interferring with the cycle.

not everything shows up in the systray.

at a mimimum...

systray, explorer.  at least in win98se.  this using c-a-d.  if you check via sysinfo, you'll see more stuff running such as taskmon, and maybe a few others.  if it's obviously not related to windows, then it should be shut down if possible.

pretty much everything else is superfluous.

what do you have running?

I'm not at home now but a lot of stuff is running.  I tried to shut some of it down and it wont let me... I'm thinking about doing an F-disk and starting over.  The only problem is that I got a dell and I don't have a Full CD-ROM of Windows  I didn't know that was part of the deal.   Man that pisses me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What operating system would you reccomend buying if you play a lot of games?? I heard Windows 2000 is the best?  I got to run out and buy a new operating system !!  That suxs.....

well... given a choice win98se is supposedly best for gaming, 2nd would be win xp pro.  i *think* win xp pro (not sure about xp home) supports dual boots.

but...  first try C-A-D  and then  use "end task" to shut unnecessary stuff down.  i'm not familar enough with winME to offer much in the way of OS specific suggestions.

Skuzzy had a list of background programs to stop somewhere in this bb, no time to look but he prob would help you out if you emailed him.
Some things I know that cause probs if win 98
Findfast--close it
OSA -- close it
Virus programs-close it
Firewall software--make sure correct ports open

If you do Kazza or other music sharing--prob a hidden file running
do an Adaware check--there is a download checker available--google it
if you running 98 then you can start in safe mode (F5 ?  on boot -can't remember)and run scandisk and defrag in safe mode--proggies not needed to start windows arn't running so defrag should finish

Hope this helps

If you can find out what is running, start up in safe mode, and you can do whatever you need to to turn it off, and defragg. I had a file I was trying to delete that would not delete because it was supposedly running, even after a restart or two, so I started in safe mode, deleted the file w/no problem. You should be able to do the same with your defragg.

Actually Heater, W2K can be streamlined much easier than XP Pro.  I prefer it over XP Pro.

Anyone running Kazaa, even when you turn it off, is going to have a horrible connection to the servers.  See my Hints and Tips for a better explanation of why.

which brings me to this question, is xp pro dual bootable? i'm finally getting a new system and chose xp pro over xp home; i've been happy with my current win98se, but... time marches on and progress goes straight down the drain and all...

I would imagine it does Shane, but cannot confirm nor deny it.  W2K does have a boot manager, so I should think XP Pro got that carried over from W2K.
