. a p3-500 is 4 year old technology, a computers lifespan for gaming is about 2 years. I think minimum system requirements of what htc has stated (p3-900 gf2) make sense as that was top of the line 2 years ago. note minimum though, that means mabye 25 fps with details turned down.

P3 900 is actually somewhat low system requirements.  I am worried if they will be able to pull off Il2 graphics with a 900 mhz machine.  Your guys system is pretty low...about 6 year old technology.  I understand that some people have 2.4 ghz machines, and some have 500 mhz machines.   AS a result, (as mentioned above) HTC has to add adjustable detail levels...otherwise Ike2k is not going to have many games to play.  However, if anyone has ever played any other games with decent graphics, with detail level on lowest the minium requirements are still about a PIII 900...this creates a problem.

You guys are forgetting one major thing here:

Upgrading AH2 to CFS or even WBIII levels means 200+ Mb downloads. That's a multiple of the present download.

AH2 would be a no-go for the average 56k user.

Sure eye-candy is nice, but if it comes with even a slight cost on playability, it's not worth it.

I've never considered a game like WW2OL, IL2 etc. playable on my system (XP1900+,512DDR,GF3Ti200,Nforce) because while it runs ok on most times, there might be 1 second pauses once in a while when the 512Mb ram isn't enough.. Or when making fast turns such as head movements, the movement clearly lags out visibly. That makes turning head an irritating move instead of a reflex action which it should be in combat.

I don't consider a fps of 30 playable at any time.. The fps has to remain over 50 at all times to be able to match the fast action. That means peak fps of 100+ and my system just can't cut it on IL2 FB unless I turn off the eye candy - and what's the point in that?

I say that you should be happy if you get improvements to the graphics, if that means you will keep the superb playability AH has. If the upgrade comes with a cost, that hurts HTC way more than a little outdated graphics engine.

56k players all warp anyway.. Make the download continuable after a pause or disruption.

Of course, HTC could just make the compnents seperately downloadable.

I wonder if HTC have done a survey of the machines the current players expect to have. I think that HTC should consider distinguishing between a playable platform and an expected platform.

I dunno guys, seperate downloads wouldn't exactly be a bad thing. Remember the "high-rez" textures that were optional for the first two years? Those were optional for a long time before HT decided to make them standard in every build. My guess is they'll either include graphics options as a default, or make the high-end effects/graphics a seperate download. They might even work it like so...

AH2 installer: 80 megs
High-Rez graphics (1024 textures, detailed effects, etc...): 50 megs

One thing to remember is that more and more games (even demos) are getting huge. Code bloat is effecting a lot of new titles out there. UT2k3 demo is 142 megs, Raven Shield runs up past 210 megs, MoH:AA demo was 175 megs, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was 119 megs. FS2k2 with full install runs close to 2 gigs all told. At the very least we're looking at a 60 meg download for AH2, given all the possible changes in the works. I wouldn't be surprised to see it come in at 70 megs or more if they decided to up the detail of everything.
