Water making devices
« on: August 31, 2003, 01:06:05 AM »
I was reading about the U.S.S. Indianapolis, and the biggest problem faced by the crew was lack of water.

Is there any emergency device that can extract moisture from the air to create drinkable water?  Or how about something that can actually take hydrogen and oxygen from the atmosphere and combine them to make water?

The only portable 'water-maker' I know about is a thing that evaporates undrinkable water, and then condenses the vapor so that it falls into a cup.

I think when you try to combine hydrogen and oxygen to get H2O, you also get a big explosion.

Getting water from the moisture in the air would not be practicle for a whole ship..... there have been people that have done it with plastic bags to collect condensation for a few ounces of water though.

One option would be de-salination ( spelling?) removing the salt from the sea water.

Nowadays you can use a desalination pump - but lots of effort for very little water.

When I was doing survival course's (blech) a desalinator, small floatable ring, fill with salt water, evaporates leaving salt behind, fresh water drains off for drinking, was recommened - but you need a couple for each person.

Fish eye's are full of liquid, turtle blood at a pinch, alway make sure you have a nylon tarp 6' x 3' to catch water and something to put it in when you catch it.

Basically you keep all this stuff in a Ditch Bag - along with other basics and grab it when the boat/ship/whatever goes down - give me the jungle/bush/veldt any day....
