Am I right in thinking Franco's the only one that's "got away with it"? Lived to a natural death and left his land in a fit state to progress smoothly after him?
I don't believe any one else has done that since classic times.
If I'm not mistaken, he only did so because he thought that the at the time prince of Spain would follow his footsteps. But he didn't, and supported democracy after the dictator died.
I think it was a pretty uneventful transition to democracy because most of the society wanted it (except, of course, for some generals, who saw their power rapidly diminishing).
There was a frustrated coup in '82, again (in part) because the king didn't support it, and without the king, some of the generals and colonels that were supporting the coup backed off.
Still, it's regarded as a good example of a mostly bloodless transition without any foreign intervention.
