Do these look like good overclocking settings?

Hi guys,

Going to start the process of overclocking my system:

Asus P4C800 Deluxe
Intel P4 2.4 800 fsb
Zalmann 7000cu- Copper heatsink & fan
1 GB(2x512)Kingston Hyper-X DDR400 PC3200 RAM
Seagate Barracuda 120 GB SATA 7200 RPM hard drive
Antec Sonata Case with additonal 120mm intake fan.  

After doing to some research on this BBS, these are the settings I plan on trying for overclocking:

JUMPERFREE CONFIGURATION:

AI OverClocking Tuner: Manual

CPU External Frequency: 230-235

DRAM Frequency: 333 mhz

AGP/PCI Frequency: 66.66/33.33

CPU Core Voltage: 1.60V

DDR Reference Voltage: 2.85V

AGP VDDQ Voltage: Leave at 150V

Performance Mode: Standard



CHIPSET:

Configure DRAM Timing by Spd: Disabled

DRAM CAS# Latency: start with 2.5, 2.0 is ideal

DRAM RAS#  Precharge: 3

DRAM RAS# to CAS#  Delay: 3

DRAM Precharge Delay: start with 6, 5 is ideal

DRAM Burst length: 8

Performance Acceleration Mode: Auto

DRAM Idle Timer: Leave alone

DRAM Refresh Mode: Leave alone



If anyone sees anything wrong with these settings, or has additonal suggestions, please speak up.

external CPU freq 200+ and DRAM freq at 333?  nuhuh.

thats running asynchronous - that and your higher latency will kill your numbers.

IF FSB is 200, dram should be running 400, if FSB is 210, DRAM should be running 420.

which is why its critical to get GOOD RAM when you buy a system you plan to overclock.  Which you did with the HyperX.  Which is 400MHZ FSB rated anyway - why underclock the RAM?

The settings you have will show how good you can overclock the processor, but then clock it back down and Run the RAM up as well in synch with the processor.  When it becomes unstable.... up the voltages, and keep going.

IMO.  Mrblack will probably be along any minute to correct any inaccuracies.

I went with the lower DRAM frequency because I read in this thread http://agw.warbirdsiii.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25479 that when you overclock the CPU External Frequency, that also automatically overclocks your DRAM frequency...therefore, that's why Alabam recommended starting with DRAM Frequency at 333.

Are you saying that I need to start my DRAM freq at 400, and go up proportionally from there as the CPU ext freq goes up?

BBgun, I appreciate your advice, please continue this dialogue, I haven't overclocked in about three years.

Is that true for everybody??  I gotta ic7-max3 and I am just now looking at overclocking.  I tried to go 233mHz but the dreaded beeeeeep  beeeeeep beeeeeeep when I tried to boot up.
  I now have it a 211mHz, but I didnt change the DRam freeq.

I may be hindered by an anemic power suppky tho.

system below with 350w poer supply.

I have the dram voltage set to 2.8v.  Do I need to kick this up a notch?

Ok, so I'll start it at 400 then. Do you know what the external CPU freq needs to be at to get me to 3.0 gig?

banana the equasion to calculate your speed is:
FSB x multiplyer = SPEED
200 x 15 = 3g
Now im not familur withj intel boards and bios for over clocking I used AMD
so for me and my system its like this:
FSB x mutli = s
200 x 12 = 2400 or 2.4g
What you need to do is goto:

and read up on the INTEl settings and read about your specific board there too several people with talk you thru what you need to do AND  how to test for stability!

As far as external freq and FSB bus goes its best to keep them in sync like staed before for my situation i have the CPU (XP2500 barton) external freq set @ 200 and the FSB @200 ( DDR 3200 ram)

No not at all my friend .
You are giving the right advice there:aok

I would add leave the CPU voltage As close to stock as you can get away with(will run cooler and last longer).

Also play around with you memory dividers.
5:4 3:2 1:1  And you might have other choices.
Try If you can to run at 1:1 You'r FSB will not be as high but you'r
memory timings will be better.
Now If you want to run a real high FSB then you will more than likely have to run divider 3:2

Ok, I'm overclocked now and up to 3.0 Ghz, nice and stable and cool. Here's my settings so far:

DRAM Frequency: 320 mhz

AGP/PCI Frequency: 66.66/33.33

CPU Core Voltage: 1.60V

DDR Reference Voltage: 2.85V

Performance Mode: Standard

CHIPSET:

Configure DRAM Timing by Spd: Disabled

DRAM CAS# Latency:  2.5

DRAM RAS# Precharge: 3

DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 3

DRAM Precharge Delay:  6

DRAM Burst length: 8

I'm stable with these settings, will start bumping the DRAM numbers down to 2,2,2,5,8 tonight and see if she continues to boot.  

All this at a chilly 27 degrees at idle. Brrrr! :)

If you can disable hyperthreading.
It will help in you'r benchmarks.
