Japanese anime...
« on: November 10, 2003, 06:43:59 PM »
I occasionally watch the cartoon channel, although I don't know why, because most of the stuff on it is really putrid.  After having watched an episode or two of Dagonball Z and Yu-GI-Oh, I have come to the conclusion that Japanese anime is the worst form of entertainment ever created.  The plots are infantile, the dialogue sounds as if it were written by a ten year old, and the movement of the characters (apparently based on two different frames per second) hardly qualifies as animation.

What is your opinion?  Am I being too harsh?

Regards, Shuckins

You are dead on!

Remember when cartoons were really like art?  Tom And Jerry, Roadrunner, Johnny Quest, Most of the Warner Bros cartoons.

That stuff on TV now is so cheap looking.

That is like saying that live action movies are awful because you saw Gigli and Matrix 3.

Come back when you see Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

-edit-
I dare you to watch Grave of the Fireflies and not even end up with watered eyes.
If you are interested - it is the story of an orphaned boy and his 3 year old sister surviving in Japan during the WWII firestorm bombings. And it is a very accurate depiction, much more harsh and cruel than has ever been portrayed on live action film.

Ghost in the Shell is the most breathtaking cyberpunk/sci-fi piece of cinema ever put on film, period. It has been praised and imiatated by almost every live action sci fi director in Hollywood. UCLA, Columbia and Yale are known to present this film every semester to their philosphy students. Thats how deep it is.

Cowboy Bebop is a film noir 25 episode series of bounty hunters with the most kickass jazz music score you can imagine, and a plot that is only surpassed by Band of Brothers in my opinion.

None of these animes are the run of the mill CRAP like DBZ, Yugiyoh, and other studmuffinottry that is subjected to kids by Fox. In fact, I wouldnt recomend any kid watch the movies I mentioned. They are NOT cartoons.

Some would also recomend Akira, and consider it the best anime ever made, but I disagree and I think its stupid.

Dragonball and Yu-hi-oh are not representative of Anime.  They are childrens shows.

In the US, animated fare is automatically assumed to be 'Children stuff'.  In Japan, animation is simply another medium for stories to be told.

Don't watch the stuff they show at peak kid times, watch the stuff that's on later at adult times.  Like a previous posters said, check out Cowboy Be-Bop, it's got great style and music to boot.  Still think anime is for kids?  Rent Urotsukidoji.  When you push your eyes back into your sockets, you'll never think of anime quite the same way again.   ...not to mention anything with tentacles.

Also available in adult anime form are two films about a Luftwaffe TA 152 pilot and a Japanese Kamikaze Rocket pilot (whatever the thing was called) somewhere. I forgot the name of the films.

LOL, you think "justice league" is good, yet you claim anime is crap.

Really, do yourself a favor try to find the first few episodes of Bebop.

You really have to watch Akira before you can really have an informed opinion on anime...

And then you just have to watch anything by Hayao Miyazaki.

Miyazaki kicks Walt Disney's bellybutton everytime. Disney knows it, too. ;)

Here's a few of his Studio Ghibli films:

Kiki's Delivery Service
Laputa Castle in the Sky
My Neighbour Totoro
Nausicaa Valley of the Wind
Porco Rosso (lovely aerial combat scenes)
Pom Poko
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away (beat Titanic at the box office in Japan)
Tombstones for Fireflies

All outstanding

Also worth seeing his directorial debut, "Lupin III The Castle of Cagliostro"
“The FBI has no hard evidence connecting Usama Bin Laden to 9/11.” --  Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI, June 5, 2006.

Regular it was called "The Cockpit" I liked the first 2 stories the last one was kind of a let down. Overall is a really kick arse movie.

There are plenty more Japanese anime for Mecha action Try Evangelion , for some more perverted twisted anime try Agent Aika, Chobits ,and love Hina,Bastard!! is good too.

I second Animal's opinion, just because you watch ****ty anime doesn't mean that  anime overall is idiotic, sometimes it hurts to try to understand it but some are easy to follow and very interesting in plot lines.

Do try to rent or Download Macross Zero episodes one and 2 and 3 if available. Your jaw will drop when you see the aerial combat scenes .

BTW They will rule the world :D  :aok

So this is the thread where all of them otakus come out of the closet, eh. I'll venture to recommend the following titles: Jin-Roh (The Wolf Brigade), Hoshi no Koe, FLCL. Available on DVD or at your local p2p medium.

Make sure to watch "Legend of the Overnoodle" as well, did I say "Overnoodle"?  I ment "Overfiend".

Anime is a varied art form, just like any other, this is your chit, and your good stuff.
