Got my deer last night....
« Reply #15 on: November 11, 2003, 11:44:45 AM »
A couple of years ago, one of Pharmacia's biz jets was landing
at Morristown NJ when a deer came out and rammed the Citation
right in the passenger door!

The door was so badly dented that the passengers and crew
had to deplane from the emergency exit over the wing.  I asked
the crew if they noticed whether the deer was wearing a white
headband with a red dot on it or not :D

Sorry about the car banana, I was trying to thin them out a wee bit this past weekend, but they are just multiplying too quickly.  Went from seeing 10 deer the whole season a couple of years ago to seeing 30+ a night now.

Rip: gutting / bleeding is so cool to 5 year old boys.  My son didn't talk about anything else last year after I was fortunate enough to harvest a deer while he was hunting with me.  He was so proud to be able to help daddy with that.  Now if he had only been a little bigger so he could have drug it out of the woods.

Haven't taken mine hunting yet here but this year he is going. We finish up bow/blackpowder season this week and start the full fledged redneck thing of all other fire arms. I was fortunate to live about 50 feet away from the edge of the woods where I hunted all through high school and my first two years of college. From the time I was 8 (first time I got to hunt with a gun) through 20 I probably killed 40-50 deer around the house in Central Alabama. This year I will probably get 5-6 weekends of hunting.

I hit a deer about 10 years ago with a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck. I was going about 100 kph and it bolted out from the side of the road and hit the left front side of the truck.

It spun around into the wheel well and then careened off into the ditch. The truck needed a new bumper and lights on that side and the left fender needed to be fixed but other than that there was no real damage. The airbags did not deploy nor did my passenger wake up.

I saw another deer strike about 2 years later in the US. I was driveing along the I-40 through a construction zone that had those concrete barriers up. The deer was in the medium and up ahead. We were doing about 50 mph and there was a tractor trailer up ahead of me. The deer jumped over the concrete barrier right in front of the truck and was thrown back into the barrier. I passed it as it was still tumbleing along the side of the road but luckly missed it. Shook me up.

Shortly later I passed the truck. The driver was talking on a cell phone (probably calling his boss) but there was no visible damage to the truck.

Considering both deer weighed about 100 lbs at least it is a amazing that greater damage was not done. I am lucky I was not driving a Honda or some other light car at the time.

By the way banana. A deer strike is covered under the comprehensive section of your auto insurance and will not affect your rates. :)

you should check out a set of the 'deer chasers'.  a pair of small whistles that hook to your bumper.  when you are going over 30 or so they put out a high frequency sound (like a dog whistle I guess).  they do work.  if you drive past deer  often you can see the change as soon as you put these on.  they will get agitated and start moving away from the road about 150 yd. ahead of you.

they get dirty and stop working after a couple weeks but you just pull them off and run them through the dishwasher.  they have a 'dove-tail' mount that glues down with an adhesive pad,  to take them off you just slide them out of the mount.

well worth the $12.

cc, that. Already got the estimate: $3884.03

My part of that is a $100 deductible. :)

But it's gonna take 2 weeks in the shop to fix! :(

:rofl  LOL!  For just $10 I'll cast a spell over your car to scare off deer whenever you drive in their vicinity.  I have a similar spell for Skunks, but that one will cost ya $20.

Strange thing about Kingairs, the Army used to have a pair
of U-21s at MMU.  They
managed to take out a deer with one engine almost every
year.  Maybe we should put some of those whistles on em:aok

I have hit 3 in the past 5 years.  No fun. Glad your ok banana! :)

Never skinned one, but would in a heart beat if I knew how. Been hunting small game all my life, but never have done any dear hunting. Would love to try it sometime with something other than my old pickup. :)

Whenever I hit a deer on the highway, I tie a rope from the deers tail to the trailer-hitch of my truck.  By the time I get home, the deer is already blooded/gutted/skinned.  Get some strange looks from other drivers though.

When I was 10, someone had hit a deer on the road out in front of our house.  My dad wasn't home, but my Mom was.  She knew what to do (She also hunts) and brought a sharp knife with her down to the road.  The deer was pregnant so instead of immediately bleeding/gutting the deer, she attemtped to save the unborn fawns life.  Unfortunately, the fawn was too premature.  She didn't gut the fawn, but gutted the Doe and we called the DNR. They came out and picked it up and thanked her for trying to save the fawns life (Shrugs).  I was pretty grossed out, never seen someone gut a deer before...
