BM,

Maybe you're looking in the wrong place. Indeed, this post could go in the Hardware/Software forum.  I'll grant you that folks like MS may take a purist view and not be able to help you if your system is not built in their image.

The best place to come for support is somewhere like the Hardware/Software forum on this and other bulletin boards. In 1994, I baulked at adding a new hard drive to my 486. But now, as a result of adding new hardware for game upgrades, I've learned a lot. And I learned a lot from the folks in the various HS forums so that now, like many others, I can build a complete system from scratch, and am rarely stumped at solving problems like the ones you describe.

So I agree with you. F--- Microsoft - as far as getting support for a problem. I have never called them once! But their software is OK. Think back to the way things were 10 years ago. Remember how to install an app, you had to copy files to a directory, some files went somewhere else, then you had to modify the directory path - all those tedious amendments to CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT... we're largely free of that these days, and it's fair to say that this has come about because of Microsoft.

Love mac, hate ms..

Only reason for me to build a new win puter is for ah, and its only getting a small drive for ah and win2k. Rest of the puter is going to run on freebsd.

I share an office with a bunch of Mac sales people.

Mac is just BSD Unix with their own GUI these days.

Mac is about 2 years behind the PC in a lot of functionality and software from a technical perspective. Small things become big things which become expensive. Simple stuff like sharing non-postscript printers, VPN clients etc.

The underlying Unix kernel is extremely capable but Apple do some stupid stuff.

Take for example DVD rewriters. Many Macs have had +/- units shipped in them, but Apple 'unsupported' the DVD+R/W format to force users to use DVD-R/W.

Mac's are also landing in the world of security updates. Those fediddleers sit there all day hogging bandwidth with their fediddleed up TCP/IP stack downloading patches. Likewise the hackers/virus writers have caught up with the fact OSX is BSD Unix and are starting to get active. Unfortunately many Mac users are so arrogant about the Mac's "superiority" they don't use Virus checkers.

Mac people also tend to live in a world with blinders on.

Like Windozes, theres a lot of good in the Mac world AND a lot of bad. Grass is always greener...

I use both mac and windoze about 50/50 but i prefer mac except for the lack of game support and the price of software and hardware. So im gonna use the new pc for gaming and the mac for the stuff that really matters.

I have this theory.  In Bill Gates' bedroom is a red button under glass.  If one were to push this button, it would send a signal to every computer in the world with a MS program on it and erase everything in that computer.  And every night, Gates comes in and fondles that button, knowing that he could bring the entire world to its knees.

In defense of MS.  I like them to no end...  When the problem exceeds my ability and the boss says to call MS (we have premier support contract) I hang up with a solution 95% of the time.  Instead of bashing MS why don't talk about your problem...  Instead of showing everyone your other problems...

You are absolutly right Microsoft must die - this big monopole should be deleted like a file.

Viva Linux - BTW there is someone who runs AH on linux - serious.

If my modem would be supported for Linux too and not only for MS Wins.... Hate Microsoft.

Yeah Artik, I've run AH under Linux natively using WineX with no problems at all assuming you've got modern hardware.

It's not the OS...it's your printer....standard answer for companies who have hardware probs is to blame Bill....typical.

Do you need DRI setup to run AH?  Or maybe just better preformance with DRI?

If by DRI you mean, Direct Rendering Infrastructure? I dunno. I just know it runs okay on WineX over oh, I dunno...2.7 or above?

I'm not sure if anyone's managed to get it running using normal Wine or not.
