                   Small Status Update -8/15/2000-

Thanks for Torgen for pointing us to the following post from Mo:

We are knee deep in getting phaseIII ready, and
unfortunately there are guts lying all over the floor, it's
not pretty. Like when you're doing an engine rebuild in
your garage, and you turn around after breakdown and
say..."my god, what have I done!?"

We are integrating some new stuff, and we will get some
shots and some small avis out before ECTS (First week
in Sept) but it'll probably be pretty quiet until them.

I'll see if we can get a quickie out of a burning plane.

                   Source thread here.

Boy, fer somethin' that was supposed to be in open beta first quarter this year, to maybe we'll have some new screen shots by sept 7 ya gotta wonder if they'll ever get it together.

Hi all,

I wouldn't expect to see anything open to the general public before the first of the year.

Mo and the boys at Playnet have set a tall order for themselves and I think they are realizing the time they set was just a little to optimistic.

Remember if they can pull off what they are claiming it's going to be revolutionary in the world of online simming.  I think we can cut em a little slack on the timing.

From their home page:

...on the ins-and-outs of the graphic elements in the soon to be award winning World War II Online™.

"soon to be award winning"?  I have not followed the development at all, but are they predicting awards for themselves?

Honestly, I'm beginning to think they're full of toejam.  They've started putting adds on their web site...ya know, show the client ur hit rate, sell some ads....no game, just sell ads.
They misjudged their open beta date by 9 months.....yeah, sure they did...it's comin'....a little fat man in a red suit, riding a sled pulled by eight tiny reindeer is bringin it.....yeah, thats the ticket, a littl fat man

FOS Crash? (Off Topic)

Hell, I'm wishing 'em the best. Ya don't go to the moon without taking risks. Your welcome to your opinion Crash, luckily it's not the only one we have to rely on. Reports from visiting players are glowing, and the Rats are up-front in admitting their ambition. Brood all ya want, I gotta root for a team like that. If I designed my dream online combat sim, it would be wwiiol. So I rather cheer than jeer.

Cya up...Brazos

CRASH,

It's not vapor ware. 2 of my squadies make regular trips to the Rat's Nest and have seen it with their own eyes.

It's just a realy HUGE project so it's taking time   I have as much faith in the Rat's as I do in HTC.

 WW2 will be here

Don't get me wrong, I hople like hell it comes....I just aint countin' on it any time soon.....like another 9 months.  It annoys me that they originally said they were gonna start open beta 1st quarter this year, and now they say, "well, maybe we'll have some new screen shots by first week in sept....9 months later.......thats lame, leads me to think it's alot of...what'd that guy call it? Vaperwear?  I just aint gonna be lookin fer it fer a quite a long time if ever.
Oh, I definately aint brooding, I dont have time to play AH as it is, much less another sim...the whole thing just struck me as so much crap when they said maybe another new screenshot by 1st week sept after 9 months of "setbacks".  At best, as a prospective customer, I dont appreciate all the hype (lieing) about when when the open beta's gonna start.  Even if they do get this thing going, they had to know when they started making claims about when the open beta's gonna start that the dates they were giving weren't accurate.  To me thats not hype, or preparing your audience, it's just lieing.  Starting your brand new company with a lie screams to me that the business integrity of these people is nill.  Too bad.

Crash- What on earth leads you to believe that they are "lieing" about anything?  Do you grasp the conceptual difference between deliberate misinformation and unexpected delays? In this business, very few products , it seems, are released on a time frame consistent with original projections.  Are the people that make those products all "liers" too?

Announcing your product is a double-edged sword.

Say nothing and people keep asking "when when when".

Give an estimate and don't make it and people start to moan (not necessarily you Crash, just an example) and question it.

Ask HTC when the next release is coming.  If they give you a date, they are either nuts or confident.  Don't make that date, and of course everyone will be talking about it.

It's a no win situation.

Well, I had no friggin clue HiTech Creations was working on a brand spanking new Flight Simulator about a year ago.  I happened to see a post somewhere announcing an open beta and stumbled into AH.  Best surprise ever.  Never heard any hype about AH until the open beta began.

WWIIOnline, OTH, has been NOTHING but hype.  Im sure they know what they want to do, but by involving all the potential users in the development process via forums, chats and BBS's, they are doing nothing except fueling expectations.

I would imagine the Rats will come out with something, sometime.  They have set lofty expectations and as such, I dont expect it anytime soon...at least not at the level people have been talking.  I have a feeling the first open beta will be similar to what we have in HTC now with maybe a bit more strat.

People who love the flight model in AH will hate the flight model in WWIIOnline.  People who beg for more ground action in AH will love WWIIOnline.  Its not a whole new genre...it offers some different action which will appeal to some and not to others.  Will I check it out?  You betcha

They could have released it then just finished it as they went, ya know add a few things here and there month by month that seems to do the trick and brings in revenue, just call it a game with constant upgrades.....oh wait never mind.
