A question for ya'll about Aircraft fires.
Many Many times I will be shooting an aircraft and it appears to catch fire. At first I thought it was a sure kill and would pull off but I found that always the fire would disappear and the con would then seem undamaged.
The only times that fire seems real (unless its a wingless wreck) is when it happens on bombers.

Do fighter aircraft catch fire short of total destruction? And if not is this phenomena unusual to observe?

Yes, AH aircraft catch fire without major structural failure. I've never seen one go out though, even if the punctured fuel tank runs dry (?). Zeros and mossies seem to be especially prone to catching fire and flying around shooting things for another 20 or 30 seconds before they blow up.

If the fire seems to appear randomly (aircraft not being fired at) and then disappears a few seconds later, I think that's a connection issue. I've seen it happen also.

I've seen this quite a bit with Spitfires, it looks like they're on fire and only lasts a second or two. Someone explained to me that it was actually the muzzle flash of the plane but there was/is a graphical bug that makes appear as if they are on fire. Makes sense to me since the only times I've seen this happen is when the other plane was in a shooting position and appeared to be firing.

P47 D11, Mossie, zekes, and 110 are very prone to actually catching fire, but can fly around for a bit after they do, untill thier wing burns off. Very annoying to take a single ping from ack and turn into a flying BBQ.

Happened to me in 3 consecutive P47 sorties.

In WW2 they could sometimes put fires out by diving.

seen some planes catch false fire just cruising around, many times.
