Best Stunts in Aces High
« on: November 20, 2003, 08:57:17 AM »
Ever watch the Stupid Human Tricks segment of the David Letterman Show?  Or the more bizarre antics in the movie and TV series *******?  Interesting things some people do that you'd never think possible ...  or sometimes even desirable.

These personal, not institutional, pushes of the envelope are comparable to stunts in aviation.  Cyber stunts often take advantage of bugs or loopholes, which is okay since they help develop fixes.

Sometimes there is a blur whether cyber stunts can be done in real life, e.g., flying inverted through hangars (possible?) ... turning around on cv decks and taking off over the stern (possible in something like STOL plane?) ... maybe using the arresting cables as reverse slingshots (impossible?).

Aces High designers have prudently prevented any game zapping abnormalities such as ripping up a port with a kamikaze cv beaching or atomizing a hangar by selecting a Lanc and dropping its bombs inside.

I was trying a backwards cv takeoff today but lost enthusiasm after couldn't quite get my Zeke reversed.  Came close, but no prize.  But it definitely looks doable.

I remember reading about stunts like taking a C-47 to 100,000 feet or so, but that seems to be more of an accidental bug than an intentional stunt.

So now in this collective stunt thread:

What's the Best Stunt you have ever done or seen in Aces High?

(Because of the fine line between bug and stunt, don't report a bug that resulted in you accidently doing something you never intended.  Instead report the best stunt you intentionally planned and accomplished, e.g., flying a B-17 upside down through a hangar.)

Oh! and for the stunt, that'd prolly be flying a 109G10 300 mph through a VH, inverted.. I can do it rightside-up again(after a few tries at it) , but try as i might i can't do it upside down again.

Once and only once I was able to pull through a loop and pass through the Fighter Hangar below me twice. The next rotation through the loop I tried to make it into an outside loop by rotating the plane 180° and ended up shearing the wings off my F4U-1 and played rocket boy. It was great fun and something I have never been able to do since then. Now I just impact the ground at a high angle of attack. :D

I once launched an FM2 off the waist catapult.

"What waist cat?" you say?

Well, the waist cat is the one you end up using when you begin your take-off roll and the carrier starts to turn to starboard just as you clear the tower island.  :D

Stunts ive seen:

Arados, Lancasters, B17s LANDING in carriers.

Val 'hovering' over carrier deck... thought it was lag, realized it was the pilot literally flying the plane at like 20mph over the deck..how he did that i got no clue.

Saw a Ju88 torpedo a B26 that had landed in water.

Arado using the JATO's to clog a vh full of flaks with smoke (he came in at like 10 ft off the ground).

One's ive done:

Fly P38 through BH/FH..inverted done it too.
Same as above, but 'hangar slalom' in large fields.

Landing fully loaded P38 on carrier.. approaching from the wrong side (bless fowler flaps and skid-spinning!) Was only able to do it again once.

Landed a vert-stab-less, wing-tip-less 262.

On one occassion, my 262 landed wayy too fast, ripped gear, belly hit the ground, was still about 100mph and the runway was ending...and the hill at the end of the runway was getting bigger... ruddered hard and did 180 in the ground, throttled plane's engines to max and stopped in less than a second. I felt like Babylon5 :D

How the heck do you get control after losing the vert stab?  I have spent 5 plus mins flying sideways but can't seem to stick a landing.  Am I wrong or is the whole losing vert stab badly modeled?  Doesn't  friction force the plane to straighten out?

not on single engine aircraft ... the 262 haveing 2 jet engines has not torque or slipstream....

the propeller spinning wants to make the aircraft itself spin ... the wings take care of most of this .. but the rudder and V-stab play a major role in stablizeing this effect

inverted, very slow yak, bounced on bubble top on small rolling hill. Could never duplicate, happened by accident, not even gonna try again.

Getting a pair of base vulchers to slam themselves into the immovable object. I flew a Zero on the deck over the airfield and then ducked under a Hanger. The bogies had gunsight blindness tried to just follow me and WHAM!

someone actually took a kate of a carrier and landed it on the back of the battleship...without wind...

Maneuvering a 262 without a vert stab
fighting in a 262 without wingtips(mmm, speed holes)
Doing a half a dozen b26 sorties off a cv(land, rearm, takeoff, land, rearm, etc)
Landing 262/234 on cv
Strafing flakpanzers with the 262(Those 30mms do a number on tanks!)

landing a kate/val on a bomber hangar
landing a kate/val on the cruiser
(Using wind is cheating!)

Taking a c47 over 27k(and then to 49k), and fighting 163's over enemy HQ's.

Once had a tiger sortie where 4 of my 8 kills were aircraft trying to strafe me, all killed with the main gun.

You manouver stab-less 262's by controlling the throttle on each engine..its nerve wrecking.

And yes, 262's on ground attack is awesome. At times my 262 has been the only plane to get to a vulched field where an M3 is close to town, surrounded by flaks and high la7's... and all the sudden this 600mph jet comes in 50ft off the dirt and smacks the m3 with quad 20's and screams away.
