Only 15 litres of pure alcohol per head annually?

Christ, they do have a problem. Do they run out out Vodka or something?

Some experts estimate one in seven Russians is an alcoholic.

Darwin at work.

LOL that story is funny? Why is this tragic? Dying from your own severe stupidity is not tragic, it is... well just stupid.

Hopefully the guy did this before he reproduced.

A tragedy would be to be killed in a car accident because some jerk off, who got drunk in a vodka drinking contest, was to dumb not to drive him and hits you.

That might well be true if you use western standards.

You people have wierd attitude towards alcohol. If you have a few shots of vodka with every meal it doesn't mean that you have a problem. Infact it's healthy for you.:aok

In this light I'm surprised they consume that little.

If you compare other drugs USA vs. Russia and sum them up, what do you get?

I bet you win.

That's 30 litres of Vodka, that's 40 fifths a year.  That does seem low.  They need to encourage their children to drink more.

I did the miko2d math on it, figuring out the Neverland Jackson donkey rides and monkey petting zoo kids out of the equation.

It still IS kinda low.

Maybe they just drink vodka a few shots at a time with supper, blarg. They need Sunny D I assume.

Ya we in north america have weird views on alchohol
15 liters of 100% alchohol is about 45 liters of vodka.
That is an absolutly stunning amount.

In beer that is 845 bottles

So in my house. Thats 845 * 4 (me, my two kids and my girl friend)
3380 bottles of beer. 281  cases

Over 5.5 cases of beer a week. And that its the average. LOL
We probably go through 1.5 cases a week between wine and beer and the ocasional paralyzer. To think of a whole nation of 2-300 million people consuming booze at that rate. Wow. Its like being in Nelsons navy and the whole nation gets a grog ration of a quart a day.

Hm.

Darwin at work, indeed. I remember I could drink up to 2 liters in one day when I was younger, but instantly swallowing 1.5 liters definetly can kill you. Even if you'll survive - your stomach will be severely burned and your liver will be almost dead.

My avarage vodka consumption is 100g daily if I don't drink beer (didn't drink beer for maybe 3 last months). I have it at the dinner table, so I rarely get drunk. I weight 90kg, but for someone who is only 45kg the result will be much different.

The problem is that now alcohol is pretty cheap and you can get it 24/7, unlike Soviet times when it was sold from 11:00 to 19:00. I really hate seing kids drinking beer  :(

Alcohol consumption raised many times in the last 10-12 years.

"Average alcohol consumption" is like an average temperature in the hospital. There are people who doze themselves with a halflitre every day, there are people who don't drink at all.

We have different definitions of what "alcoholism" is. It stunned me when I have heard that in the 80s there were 5 times more alcoholics in the US then in USSR, no matter that it's pretty obvious that we drink more.

Another important thing is phisiological condition and metabolism. Also, people in Central Asia don't drink much, but they smoke and chew. Guess where general health was better.
