When we had our first child, we wanted to pick a good name too, so I set up nameourkid.com

Start with a list of themes you DON'T wanna use. Here's a few you might wanna avoid:

Porn
Geographical names/regions
Pop Icons
Intentionally misspelled Hip Hop adaptations of words/existing names
Heavyhanded Biblical references
Names from Fairytales

Make it simple, ambigious, dignified and then let the girl define herself from there on in. Don't comdemn her to live up to some pretentious appelation such as Britany or Shania.

If all else fails, go with Flossy or USAgirl.

Having seen the original Dr. Zhivago and the new Masterpiece Theater remake, and having concluded that Julie Christie and Keira Knightley are two of the hottest females who ever walked the planet, may I suggest: Larissa

Advantages: Comes with the ready-made nickname of Lara, plus a really cool theme song for love-sick boyfriends to tip orchestras to play.

Disadvantages: distinctly Eastern European (if your last name is Corleone or O'Toole, it might be a little awkward, particularly with the balalaika music)

Ive always liked the name Serena.

Derivative Selene, greek goddess of the moon, latin subroot Sereniatus (I think closest english word is 'serenity'?)

In spanish its meaning is more like 'she who brings inner peace'.

I tried to get a nordic heritage friend of mine to name his daughter Shaniquah Lebron....

He declined and named her after his grandmother.

I'm a firm believer in naming my kids after relatives. I feel it's a great way to pass down the memory of wonderful people through generations, and it's a true honor to the person for whom someone is named.

I was gonna say tracing the family tree for a name, you might even learn something about your family's history while you are at it:)

Whatever you do, for the love of god, do not give her a freaking hippy name (There were 10 billion kids named "Unique" last year. Do not give her a flash in the pan trendy pop-culture name (There were 10 billion girls named "Trinity" last year. And for the cripes sake do not take a common name, **** up the spelling and think it original, it's not (There were 10 billion girls named "Bryndah" last year).
