Posting this here b/c I'm not sure if you are still reading the Terrain Editor forum. Others may benefit from this as well.
Now I think I see what your complaint about the map for the Great Lake is. You are saying that the view in MapMaker is very light b/c the elevation is pretty much the same? If so, here are some suggestions:
1. Change the contrast value under the Display Settings tab (click on the '+'). If you bump up the contrast it will accentuate the roughness. See
http://www.cris.com/~reaper/greatlakes.jpg I also moved the light source location (the little ball) in the display settings area. I just guessed at the contrast and light direction, if you play with them you may find a setting you like better.
2. You can change to the cover data plot and use that as the basis for your map. This will show the location of the water as well as cities.
