I'm getting one for my car... now those morons that weave through traffic while on the phone will have to weave with 2 hands from now on!

http://www.jang.com.pk/thenews/dec2003-daily/21-12-2003/main/main7.htm

"Informed official sources said an initial investigation has also strengthened the view among most investigators that electronic device jammers provided by the US that accompanied the (Pakistani) president’s car must have delayed the signals from a remote-controlled device or a cell phone to an improvised trigger attached with the explosives. There are reasons to believe that the jammers had in fact foiled the terrorist attack on President Musharraf," said an official familiar with the ongoing investigations."

You don't need to buy one... there are plans for them that basically involve wire coiled around a Pringles can.  Current is supplied by an automotive starter coil.  Supposedly can make a phone drop a call from 30-50 feet away, depending on power source.

Always thought it'd be cool to have one in your car: get cut off by a moron on a cell phone, push the button and his call drops. :)

I'd just like to have them installed in perminant locations (restaurants and movie theaters come to mind).
the only thing ruder than people who won't shut-off the phone while eating dinner, are the bastards who actually take the call and carry on a phone conversation(at 3-4 times normal dinner conversation volume) at the dinner table.

here's a free clue for those who need it- if you are so "in demand" that your phone can't be turned off for an hour or 2, then you don't have enough free time for movies or eating out.  rent a dvd and eat in your car.

Hmm - so how about people who really need a cell-phone to be available 24/7? Imagine I have week-end duty in the hospital - everything is calm so I decide to take lunch with a couple of friends at the restaurant? Or how about I am all alone at my first nightshift and cannot reach my superior because he is out at the theater? Cutting down ALL cellphone traffic isn't the solution. It's far easier and more effective to catch that rude kinda people in the act. Throw em out off the theater, tell em to shut up at the table - take away their license when taking calls in the car. Some people are dependent on reachability but that doesn't mean you should exclude them from a normal life!

We're not locking cars down at 50MPH just because some people are speeding - are we? (which might be even a more useful idea!)

---

Using it as an anti-terrorist measure might be valid in certain circumstances. But again - are you forbidding all private cars only because some nuts use em as bombs?

every resturant I've ever been to will bring you a msg if someone calls.  if you are truly that much in demand leave the number to the resturant as a contact (it worked for years before cell phones).

saying something to someone who doesn't know common curtesy hasn't shown much progress in the last 20 years.

I hear at least 1 vell phone go off at every resturant meal, and just about every time you go to a theater that is more than 1/2 full.

if it's truly an emergency, use a satellite pager -- they have no holes in coverage (but can be jammed too, I suppose).

Why do you get so agitated over cell phones over there? If you don't like cell phones then you can choose not to have one. The problem is the people who have no respect for others, not the cell phones. Also you have people with cars that have whistles in their exhaust pipes or cars with no exhaust pipes at all and yet people can drive them around as they please.

We did have an anti cell phone movement too about 5 years ago. That passed quickly and people have also improved their etiquette. I can't remember the last time I was bothered by a cell phone conversation.

You're right, it's NOT the cell phone, it's the person using it.  I doubt anyone would argue that.  Of course, jamming the signal will prevent the bellybutton who brings his powered on cell phone into a theater from receiving a call.
