A call to all forum gear heads:

I've been to a couple of other forums and figured I'd try here too. My Jeep's tranny is making a helova noise.  It vibrates like hell and has sort of a "gear wine" to it.  It is an automatic and does it in all gears it seems.  Could the torque converter also be the possible culprit.

ahh jeep transmissions.

they still get them from the lowest bidder? or they all crysler now?


my last one had a ford engine gm tranny and fisher price breaks.


your gonna have to pull it anyway. ask several garages who does their tranny work ( alot farm it out now)  they will ususaly charge you a couple hundred to tell you whats wrong. you gotta trust your tranny guy so choose well.  and bring a check book (think navy aid, or at least dont forget them.) my last one cost 1300 bucks for a manual just rebuilt.

cherokee forum

they have forums for other models to.  haven't been alot of expert advice there but there is a lot of "been there, done that" advice for things that are common on different models.

 could you be in between selections (p/t 4wd, f/t low, f/t hi, 2wd).  on my cherokee at least they are notorious for being screwed up on drive selection, almost all eventually need some sort of aftermarket fix.


Btw- as far as who makes what.  I've become convinced that they just take a truck around to all the auto manufacturers and load it up with left over parts,  from these they make jeeps.  I enjoy driving it, but when it comes to working on it, it is the most frankenstien POS I've ever turned a wrench on.

thanks for the replys...sorry to dissapoint those looking for transvestite stuff or whatever.

What really pisses me off is the fact that the thing will be paid for in like 2 months.....just replaced the engine last summer and now the tranny.  I know how to pull one but just dont know jack about rebuilding them.  I got a week off coming up the only thing i need is a tranny jack.  I think i'm gonna pull it myself then take it to a shop...save on some labor costs.

PS  I read tonite all the horrors people have had with chrysler transmisions over the last ten years and I'm at least happy to say this one lasted 125,000 miles.  Engine would have lasted longer but it over heated in the middle of the desert on an illfated road trip to vegas bout 2 years ago.

if its not a chain whine in the transfer case .. then its most likely a worn out trans .. clutches and seals are shot

smell the fluid if its burnt smelling then pull the pan ... look for black / grey soot and metal particals

when it starts sliping its bands are shot .. its rebuild time


besure you get a fresh converter in the rebuild also ... dont let them reuse the old one its gonna have metal in it to .

overheating is the major complaint on the jeep forums.  the straight-6 4.0 with the closed system is the worst.  who ever thought up that closed system was a real prettythang.  everyone has overheat problems with them.


what model/year are you driving?

if it is time to replace the tansmision, here's a good place to start.  I saw this sight recomended on the jeep forums, I don't have any personal experience with them as far as quality or service, but it would give you a quick idea what kind of cost to expect  http://www.rebuilt-auto-transmissions.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?catid=31

Thats what I would do, they'll probably give you a new tranny (rebuilt) in exchange for your broken one. As far as fixing it at home, you need alot of special tools. I wouldnt even bother.

Get a car from asia, they are bulletproof but ugly as he** imo.

My gf wants an X5 or ML and they look good, but i hope she gets a Nissan or Toyota with diesel. Im not gonna use it, but i dread the incoming bills later on.

Would rather have an Audi A6 or Bmw 5 series stationwagon but she is the boss :aok
