OK - so I bought this D-Link 604+ ADSL Router to link my two PCs and one laptop to the Net.

This has to be easy I thought, just plug it in, read the manual, and away we go - you must be joking - the manual is about three pages of Techno-babble written in 5 pitch text you can't read without a magnifying glass - and having followed the instructions to the letter (I think) - I am no further forward than when I started - still can't get on the net, and still can't connect any machines together on the network.

My ISP is BT Openworld and fortunately, I kept my original USB Frog Modem and account on one PC and tried to set up the other with the Router etc - otherwise, you would not be reading this.

So, the question is - does anyone have experience with this router - and better still, configuring it to run under BT Openworld via Windows Explorer ?

According to the html based configuration routine - the ADSL line is connected, and a ping works OK - but I cannot get Explorer to connect to any site online.

Any comments / help will be appreciated

First you need to log onto your router and run the setup program.  You'll need the same information you supplied to your modem program.  ISP user ID and password, email info etc.

Open IE and type 192.168.0.0 into the website address box, or whatever similar number your manul calls for.

The Router will open a webpage in IE and ask for the userID and password given in the manual.

Log in and run the setup program.
Easy in-game again.

Hi Easy

Yep - done all that - and after completion the configuration system says it's connected - but I cannot get to any other website via the browser ! (browser says I am not connected !!!)

Going nuts here !!

Open IE and click Tools>Internet Options then the Connections tab.

Then click Lan Settings and in the box that comes up put a check next to 'Automatically Detect Network Setting'.

OK out and see what happens.

Do BT Connect use PPoE (point to point over Ethernet) requiring a login?  Or is it a "simple" network connection with an assigned IP address?

My Di-614+ was a simple plug and play operation (same as 604, but with wireless connectivity) for my wired connections.  Simple DHCP assignments.  (my OS is WinXP)

BT Openworld requires PPPoA according to their website, though you are required to log in with a user name and password - which would suggest PPPoE !!

Having said that, there is a Static IP Address (which I have provided to the router and which it is using) - so the connection should work (and it says it is connected) - but when you launch IE, the only message is that 'The page is not available' etc etc

(Cod - I am beginning to sound technical !!)

Sounds like you may need to reduce your MTU. You can find information about doing that Here >>.

Log into your router, (type 192.168.0.1 into your explorer browser while connected to the router) and use the setup wizard which gives you options for setting up dynamic, static or PPoE connections.  Select PPoE and follow the prompts.  That should get you set up.

You might need to contact BT Connect to see if you need to enter a service name in the box provided.  I doubt it, though.

If you don't want to use the wizard, once you log into the router, go: Home -> WAN -> PPoE and enter the appropriate info in the appropriate boxes.  Here is where they give you the options of the different types of PPoE (static vs dynamic).

Hi BB

Thanks for the reply - especially the RTFM point. ;)  Unfortunately, I have downloaded the manual (and followed the instructions) and the router says I am connected. The issue is that even though the router appears to be connected, IE will not then allow passage to any other site.

I guess there is something in the configuration of IE that is blocking progress - but I don't know what.

Anyway - thanks for the suggestions

Fox,

   What version of windoze are you using?

Some times you need to release the ip it is directed at and lease a new connection.  This is common with 95-97-98 versions.  Can happen any time you change routers or connection method.  For some reason it does not let go of the old connection information and renew it on its own.

   I have had the same problem.  Trying to think of the command, has been a couple years since I got rid of that  windoze crap.

   You may run the command in the run box or find the app icon in the system or system32 folder, dont remember which.  It is winpfig or something.  Unfortuantly I do not have a 95,97 or 98 version running right now, or I would find it for you.

  To bad Hitech wont port to Linux, or FreeBSD for Mac.  Both superior OS's for Graphics, Networking and Servers.

From your description it sounds like you've got most of it working, but you lack proper DNS (Domain Name Service) setup. You can confirm this by trying to ping somebody out on the Internet by their numeric IP address. If you can ping by numeric address but not by Domain name, then everything is OK except your DNS server. I don't know how your ISP and router do this, but at least this should get you off in the right direction.


For example, the IP address of cisco.com is:

198.133.219.25


If you can ping that and get replies, but you can't ping "cisco.com", then..... BINGO.  No DNS. Ask your ISP for help setting up DNS.

Great things routers !!

Have now got connection to the Net via both machines - no problem - thanks for all suggestions made here - it was to do with DNS.

Second issue is in regard to the LAN. I can see three drives on Computer 2 - both are enabled for file sharing on Comp 2, but only one actually opens - each time I try the other I get a message to the effect that I am not authorised to view it, and that there is insufficient memory in the server.

Any ideas

(white beard now falling out - eyes fading - feeling older by the minute !!)
