Maybe it's too big a jump though, been using a .22 magnum
The 30-06 is an ok round but you would be better off with the 308
Now keep in mind that all 30 cal rifle bulletts are 308 diameter.
there fore it can be confusiong.
the 308 with proper optics and good weather is in the hands of a good rifleman accurate to 800-100 metters.
Although I would not try and place a kill shot over 700 meters but thats just me.
Now If you really want a nice weapon try the winchester 300 mag.
Its a belted cartridge and very robust.
Also there are alot of different combos of reloads for it out there.
From mild to wild.
Recoil can be a little harse but If you install a mcmillin stock like in my pic above
And a muzzle brake you will hardly notice the recoil.
Now keep in mide there is a trade off with a muzzle brake you will have a louder muzzle report(bigger boom) but depending on wich kind you get.
most of the sound may be directed to the sides.
But for a true sniper rifle a muzzle brake on a small cal weapon is a no no.
You get away with it on a 50 cal beause you are hopefully very far away from target to begin with
