A lot of these critters get attached to systems when people download Freeware, which is paid for and sponsored by advertisers.
They in-turn collect your personal demographics and use (or sell) the information for spam and other purposes.
Usually people authorize the use of the spyware on their computers innocently when they approve those "product license" "thingys", that often go by quickly during installs.

BTW, this product doesn't block cookies. You'll see them come back unless you turn OFF cookies from within your browser as was suggested earlier. That's why I run it daily.
