Hurricane MkI of the Finnish Airforce(..wannabe anyway)
« on: February 23, 2004, 08:05:05 PM »
Looks promising in the first picture?

 Well, look again ;)

Aye, those are just the large problems. Have many more small problems as well. Currently working on work-arounds to these problems - for one example, since some parts are asymmetrically mapped, I had to create diffrent panel lines for the left side and the right side.

However, some problems, just don't seem there's anyway to go around it.

So I'm sorry to disappoint our militant Finnish flightsim enthusiasts, that the chances are, my finished work would probably become a reminder of what a correctly skinned FAF Hurricane might look like. :(

Oh, if you see this Wmaker, I need references for the top and under surfaces of the wings of Finnish Hurricanes. Please send it to me via E-mail if you can.

I've always thought something was wrong with that hurricane! Especially that unmapped underside of the nose.
Good thing you posted it Kweassa :aok

YaaaaaaY again!!! :D

Here's the Hurricane I'd like to see, HC-452:

...but with the number 5 on its tail and those "two and a half" kill markings which can be seen here:

http://www.virtualpilots.fi/feature/photoreports/helsinginpuolustus2004/

The reason I'd like to see this particular Hurricane is that it had almost half of the total number of Hurricane kills in FiAF (5 ˝ was the total) and it is the only one in existence today! :)

Yeah Kweassa, I know about those texture problems in the Hurricane. Had the exact same troubles when Kanttori was doing the Hurricane skin for the FinRus maps. :(

P.S Check you mailbox! ;)

can you get the texture to look like canvas over wood?  That would really be impressive.

Yeah, I've been working on Hurricanes myself.  You're right, the fuselage is a TOTAL DISASTER.  And unfortunately, these problems are shared by all versions of the Hurricane in AH.  The same different vertical scales on the left and right sides, the same big overlap of the bottom of the wing along the whole rear part of the left side, the same gaps in the paint along the bottom centerline.

I can KINDA work with the different scales on the sides.  However, the big overlap of the wing bottom along the side is pretty much a lost cause.  But since it's HTC's fault, they can't hold it against us when we submit the skins :rolleyes.

The thing that annoys me most, however, is the lack of 2 lower wing skins.  Almost all the Hurri.1s that I want to do had the 1/2 black, 1/2 white belly :(

Update:

Managed to work around a few problems:

* Finished basic coloring

* Right fuselage textures, are about 105% bigger in order to match the size of the left fuselage textures, when mapped.

* Found where the leading edge textures are located.

* Gave up on fuselage bands.

* Managed to make the left rear fuselage and right rear fuselage symmetrical.

* Added a few "imaginary" panel lines to make the under surface of the nose area look appropriate.

* Added new tires and radiator grating

* Added a "canvas" effect to the tail stabs and rear fuselage area

 ..

Now, I'm ready to start on panel lines and rivets. The red panel lines seen in the pic, are the "underlying" panel lines I use for skinning. I just slap a layer over it and 'trace' the underlying panel lines with correct color depths, and then make the underlying lines invisible when the job is finished.

ps) Oh, I found a new bug.

It looks like a bug in the 3D model, than the textures - the Hurricane gears, overlap each other when retracting. It also doesn't match the textures where the gears are retracted under the wing.

I have a question, Wmaker

On the site which you gave the link, in one of the pictures, there's a text on the fuselage of the Hurricane.

 I'm not sure what it reades, but it seems to be;

 "M I E H I S T O(umlaut) S U K S E T" <- is this correct?

ps) Oh, I'd also appreciate it if anyone has references to Finnish pilot gear/suit, and maybe a pic of Mr.Aarno Siro when he was younger ;D

It's correct,  "MIEHISTÖSUKSET" means "crew skis".

Yes, I think it was common practice to have skis in combat aircraft along with a small survival pack. They come in handy if you get shot down far in the wilderness in wintertime. :) They're probably of a foldable model.

There's a story about a guy who used the skis (not  in a Hurricane, but anyway). Scroll down to "Dead man skiing" for a brief description of the event.

Thanks wasq! :)

Sounds VERY cool when you ask about these details Kweassa! Making of the first Finnish Air Force aircraft skin for AH2 is in very good hands!! :)

P.S I sent you mail about the pilot details.
