190a-5.  It is probably the best of the 2nd tier planes, in my opinion anyways.

The frickin irony of all this, is the Fw190A-5 is a '43, mid-war plane, and our AH Spit9 is a '42 model.

190A5 is a fun plane, is my plane of choice if I have to fly LW ie CT.

Flown well it can give a spit driver serious thrill issues.

Agreed... people think it's second tier but if you can manage your energy well then you can do fine.  The huge range is nice too :)

Not even close.....

In terms of simple turning, the Spit XIV turns left as well as the Mk.IX does. It's not quite as good in right turns, but still a hell of a lot better than the 190A-5. Add to that its awesome vertical ability and the 190, any 190 is badly over-matched. In any fight with neutral tactical advantage and equally skilled pilots, the 190 dies.

There's a reason why it's perked. There's also a reason why most players don't understand why it is perked. Go to the DA with one, flying it enough to grasp it capabilities and you'll discover that it is a truly awesome airplane. I prefer it over the Tempest if I'm going to fly a perk fighter.

Just for the record, the FM-2 is not an early-war fighter. The F4F-4 is, so are both P-40s. Even the Hurri IIC would be classified as mid-war. Likewise for the Ki-61.

I would define early war meaning in active squadron service prior to 1942.

Early-war based upon being in active service before 1942, would include:

P-40s
F4F-4
Bf 109E
Bf 109F
Spitfire I
Spitfire V
A6M2
C.202
Hurri Mk.I
Bf 110C

Yak9-U-  It'll outrun what it can't outturn and outturn what it can't outrun.
it's small, hard to hit and easy to force a overshoot with.

Yak9U is late war, and hardly "second tier."

My vote goes to the Ki-61, followed by the .205.  Both are reasonably capable, and both tend to be underestimated in the MA.

If we're talking pre-1942, I'll go with the 109F.

spit1.

It's kinda slow and dorky but it's up for pretty much any fight.
