Wrong Lazs. Check the pdf manuals on Browning's website like MiniD suggested.

Besides a so-called DA HP has to be quite different mechanically from an original HP. I've never field disassembled a DA browning, but I know the real HP quite well, and I don't see how you can turn it into a DA gun without redesigning the whole mechanism. Browning used the High Power name on the DA version probably as a marketing move, but they are not a design of John Browning.

And if you give a look to the inners of a real HP, you'll quickly understand why I suggest to get rid of the magazine safety.

The original browning design was a single action. The gun I am thinking of is really just a varient of the hi power.. the BDA. About all you see is the BDA round here.. but... I was wrong. spoke too soon.

It was kinda pompous of me to contradict someone who carried one for so long...

again, sorry, I was wrong. Everyone just calls all the BDA's round here hi-powers... All the surplus ones I've seen and shot (not many but a few) were single action.

I made an incorrect assumption about a firearm that I was not very familiar with.

You don't get away with much on this board...

On a brighter note.... I just (two hours ago)picked out one of my new Makarov commie guns from a lot of four. I have to wait 10 days for it and.... get the other two (bought 3) doled out to me one a month (stupid California law)....

Soon I will be pretending to be a Makarov expert... hopefully, a little more subdued.

Lasz, I haven't shot a Kimber yet, so I can't comment on them personally. From yourself and others (including instructors at Gunsite) I've heard that they are high quality guns. So much so, that, as I said, I'll probably look to them first. However, after 15 years with my Colt, I'd trust it before anything else.

As to the Browning, I believe that some of the newer Hi-Powers may be coming out as double-action, but I was refering to the original Belgein FN Hi-Powers. Incredibly detailed and well-made weapons. My dad has two, one is a Canadian Inglis-made model with the grip slot for the stock and the other is an engraved Belguin Renaissance model that my grandparents bought him years ago:

I'm a fan of the HI-power but who ever did that to that gun needs to know when to stop tricking it out. I've seen teh local mexican gangsters driving cars with less flash than that.

I'm in touch with a local FFL dealer and I'm going to order a Markov. But before I do, you mentioned in another thread being able to pay 10.00 more for a hand selected one, and now hand selecting one yourself. Just curious, I would like to get a "good" one if I can. I was thinking about going through AIMPISTOLS. I thought that was your source too.

I'm used to either dealers or inheriting my weapons so this is new to me. Those Mauser K-98s they have look cool too. And a Nagant for $50.00. My wife would kill me if I just started buying a bunch of cheap surplus guns right about now though.

Oh, there's a lot of guadiness to it. In my dad's defense, he didn't pick it out. However, you just have to overlook the flash and admire it for the craftsmanship that went into the engraving. The scrollwork is amazing. Needless to say, it spends most of its time in the safe, although it does shoot very well.

If I remember correctly, the early (80's?) Browning BDA's were actually SigSauer P220's types.

I've seen many engraved guns... Alot are bad, but the best engravers can take a plane jane gun and turn it into a 10,000 dollar work of art. My favorites are some of the old Colt SAA's nearly covered with elaborate scroll work but done so nicely the gun seems to have grown like that.

I own one engraved gun. It is a Merkle Double Rilfe in 9.3x74. This is one of my pride and joys of my collection. Its different than the old Winchester rilfes, the SAA Colts, 1911's ect. It has class, and is done in 100% pure taste. At the Shot Show in LasVegas this past month, I was able to play with a Merkle double in 500 Nitro. New for this year. It is my next goal to aquire one of these fine doubles. If I am lucky enough to get on the waiting list...

Beautiful gun.

This winter I go to hold a Holland & Holland double that was in .470 Nitro. I didn't know what was worse; the fear I'd drop it or the fear I wouldn't be able to let it go

BTW, if you've never been there, head over to http://www.accuratereloading.com It's a website devoted to shooting and hunting. There are many double rifle fans there. Most of the people in the forums are very knowledgable.

Yeah I have a few Rifles... Pre-64 Winchesters are among my most favorite... Although they are among the most faked out there unfortunetly. So one needs to really be cautious when buying one. If it is a "parts gun", alot of the times you can tell. Then on the other hand some are so well put together its near imposible to tell if it is original form or has been put together.

Colts are probably the most pricey of them all. Take a Colt SAA issued in 1878 to the army. That gun now can bring in poor condition 4000 dollars or more... I dont even want to think about the prices of a near Mint one.

I am not a collector by any means. I have quite a few guns, but its by no means a collection in comparison to some of the bigger gun collectors I've met here on the East coast and become very good friends with. I was lucky enough to have grown up in and around the gun bissness. The most important rule i've found in buying and looking for that right gun is it pays to be patient.

I'll shut up now. I eat sleep and breath guns. Getting me talking about them is the last thing you all want lol...

I think you'll find some fellow "gun nuts" here.

My dad and I used to be into military firearms, mostly WW2. Had several full auto's. Now we're spending most of our money on hunting rifles and such. With a few pistols and military arms thrown in for balance
