Engine sounds back to old model?
« on: March 20, 2004, 01:47:31 AM »
I havent downloaded the new betas yet, but I read with some dismay that they changed the engine sound model back to the "old" way (AH1?). Is this a concession to the many players complaining, who obviously never understood the concept of the constant speed prop? Hitech used to go for realism, even in the face of a lot of people asking for more "gamey" solutions (AH1 levelbombing mode comes to mind).
I have flown many hours in constant speed prop planes, and I really liked the new sound model, even though I agree that merely changing the volume doesn´t do the fact of ramming in the throttle justice. In the plane you feel the deepening vibration from the engine, the sound gets more "throaty", without changing pitch, of course.
I favour a solution that is closer to reality, even if it hits many people used to car engines or fixed pitch props as "unrealistic". By the way, not even the mighty Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 gets this one right!

Maybe they were having some problems with it..

At any rate, I liked the new one, too. Shame it had to go back to the old one.

I was just getting used to the new one...........

HT did say he was going to pay lots of attn to the pitch next time he took his yellow thing up, maybe they finished putting the inverted oil system in and he did.......

This is the second time we've tried to make this change.  The basic idea is correct but it just doesn't come out quite right.  HT's theory is that the shape of the wave needs to be modified in more than just amplitude while keeping the same frequency when you make a throttle adjustment without chaning RPM.

I think that volume should be linked to manifiold pressure and not tied to throttle......... I know its the same at constant rpm but when fiddling with both it would be more accurate.

Plus the  idle noise should be a lot louder for short un silenced exhaust stubs of many AC modelled

Dadgum pyro, thats what I was trying to say. I just couldnt get it to come out right..lol

I like the theory, hope it can be worked out in the future. Every time I fly (which is daily) and pull the props back, I think of AHII engine sounds...thats sad..lol !!!
