How can you live in a pisshole like Billings and think there's a worse place to live in the US?  I must agree though, should any californians be reading this, Oregon does indeed suck.  You'd be better off moving to Mexico.

Oregon's moronic traffic laws;

Most highways in Oregon are two lanes.
1. The law says the left lane is only for passing.
2. You should not pass on the right.
3. Slower traffic should move to the right lane to allow faster traffic to pass.

So what happens;
With only two lanes you will invariably encounter traffic in the right lane going as slow as 45 and people in the left lane that want to go 90. The people that want to go 90 interpret the law to mean that you have to get out of their way RIGHT NOW, NO MATTER WHAT! So if you're in the left lane and you see someone coming up behind you, get over right away, even if it means slaming on your brakes to avoid rear-ending that 45 mph guy in the right lane. You wouldn't want to force that guy coming up behind you to slow down. That might inconvenience him! You see, the law tells them they are not supposed to pass you on the right. The law tells them that slower traffic has to move into the right lane. This means that even if you are going 80 in the left lane and some one comes up behind doing 90, you have to get out of his way, RIGHT NOW!

Can you imagine if California's law said no passing on the right? You could have 6 lanes of traffic and someone in the left lane doing 50 and all cars on the freeway would be limited to 50 mph because you can't pass that guy in the far left lane.

I have to admit, Oregon has recently added a phrase in the drivers manual that suggests you will not desire to pass people if you will be exceeding the speed limit. Most gons (Oregonians) haven't read this.

Oregon is nice, Oregon is friendly, Oregon is stupid. Don't get me started on the liquor laws.

also known as the "lead, follow, or just get the hell out of the way."  law.

this is one of the best  things about Oregon.  it's simple, drive in the right lane, when you come up on a car going slower, go around, get back in the right lane.

saves people constantly switching lanes to go around some a-hole with his cruise-control set to 60 in a 65, driving in the fast lane because it's just too much damn effort to switch it off or change lanes when encountering a slower car.

the problem is we don't take the law far enough.  these rules need to be enforced to the extreame (you could drive faster safely if people where more organised about it).

also you should have to have a freeway endorsment on your license to use the interstate.  if you get caught stopping your car at the end of an on-ramp(and trying to merge with heavey 70mph traffic from a stand still) or camping in the fast lane at slower speed you should loose the right to use the freeway.

if you are afraid of your car, stay off the freeway.

BTW- sorry for the rant, but you struck a nerve.  we have a very simple, clear and easy to understand system to avoid congestion on the freeway, the average 2 year old can figure it out.  nobody apointed you traffic regulator, so if a car is speeding let him by(this way he isn't 20' from you when he crashes),  if you can't handle it, greyhound goes to most citys.

I disagree with you, it doesn't work the way you think, but I don't want to "get into it". California does it different, they don't have the same moronic traffic laws as Oregon.

I think you're reading a bit into the "passing lane" laws wire.  "Vans, Trucks, Campers: Unlawfull to use left lane except when passing".

I've never seen anything posted in Oregon about either passing on the right nor driving in the left lane even when not passing someone.  I see those signs in Washington, where everyone drives in the left lane and passes on the right.

All I know about driving in Oregon is that if someone puts on their breaks in the left lane to attempt to merge into backed up traffic in the right lane at the last minute... they're most likely a Californian.  If someone cuts across 3 lanes of traffic to hit their exit at the last minute... they're most likley a californian.  If a snowflake falls and a car decides to park in the middle lane of a freeway... they're most likely a californian.

Other than that... if you don't like the way traffic is in Oregon... move your bellybutton back down to california.

it's not so much the californians we don't like.  it's the Cali-attitude.  It goes something like this.

"hey, hows it going?  I just moved up here from LA.  you lived here long?  It's so much nicer up here.  cleaner, the people are nicer, I just needed to get out of so-cal desparately, I feel like a new person up here.  you know you sure have some stupid laws around here though.  some of us where talking and we'd like to see if we can change some of these laws to be more reasonable, like they where in Cali.  be right back, need another latte."

(is that the same one that pisses you off in washington?)

anyway, back to traffic-
  if you are parked, at the very end of the on ramp with your blinker on, trying to merge with 70mph, bumper to bumper traffic from a standstill, well you're from somewhere else, much farther west than here.

the Oregon traffic law is so very simple.  "slower traffic keep right".  if someone is gaining on you from behind while you drive down the freeway,  then he is moving faster than you.  since he is faster, then you are the slower traffic,  keep right.

hehe i guess we tired of tree huggers tring to save the salmon and tear down are dams so we have to pay outragous power prices like they do,,lol<~~which fishing has never been better!! been so many fish,,they started letting people fish for salmon now for free,,,use to be only indians could fish for them on most rivers<~~and they get to use nets!!

got nothing against people tring to save the envierment,,but!! it always turns out to be crap,,,lol,,,like in my area,,sence we get alot of wind,,they wanted us to build wind farms to harvest engery instead of using dams for most of the power<~~they spent tons on wind farms here to save the envirment,,but now they dont like that either,,because they figured out some birds are being killed by wind farms,,,lol,,doesnt matter what you do,,lol
