That seems like odd resoning. Why would a people "kicking ass" neccesarily make some nickname for them a complement and thus acceptable.  

For example take the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the general use of the term "Brave" to describe indian historical figures. The term "Braves" obviously refers to the strong tradition of Indian warriors. By your standard it would be a complement and perhaps not offensive. Yet the fact is that many indian people are offended by that name being used to characterise their people.
